Nina Strömgren Allen, PhD, Professor of Plant Biology, Director of the Cellular and Molecular Imaging Facility, and Chair of the Faculty Senate at North Carolina State University, is a leader in the field of cell motility and imaging. During her thirty years on the faculties at Dartmouth College (1975-1984), Wake Forest University (1984-1994) and North Carolina State University (1995-present), Nina has been a mentor and role model to countless undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty. Her innovative work with video enhanced microscopy helped to revolutionize light microscopy and earned her a seminal patent (with Robert Day Allen). Her wide-ranging interests and talents have led to collaborations across numerous disciplines, including plant biology, medicine, bioengineering, and chemical engineering. She is also a pioneer: an early member of Women in Cell Biology, she has been an inspiration to the women scientists who have followed her.
