NC State will recognize Human Rights Week 2003 with a number of events each day between March 24 and March 28. Events of note include the "Pro-Choice Religious Leaders Panel" on Monday, March 24; "Peace and Engineering" and "Gay History of the Triangle and the South" on Tuesday, March 25; "Reading - Human Rights in Literature and the Media" on Wednesday, March 26; and the Park Scholars symposium, "A Sustainable Future: Challenging Communities to Change," on Thursday, March 27. Selected speakers during the week will include Luis Gilberto Murillo, former governor of Colombia, who will present "Fighting for Colombia" on Monday, March 24; Brent Scarpo, founder of the film production company New Light Media, who will also present his film, "Journey to a Hate-Free Millennium," on Tuesday, March 25; and Dr. Peggy McIntosh, director of the Wellesley College Center for Research and Women, who will present "How Privilege Systems Undermine Democratic Ideals" on Thursday, March 27. In addition to Scarpo's film, a number of other films related to human rights will also be shown during the week, including "Chercher La Vie (Looking for Life); "Africa, I Will Fleece You"; and "Constitution: A Delicate Balance." NC State Chancellor Marye Anne Fox and other campus leaders will officially kick off Human Rights Week 2003 on Tuesday at noon on the Brickyard, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be read.
