Alumni association honors 18
as distinguished faculty

To honor excellence in teaching, research, extension and outreach, the NC State Alumni Association has recognized 18 faculty members with stipends totaling $70,000 for their contributions to the university’s academic excellence.

NC State officials bestowed the awards at the annual Alumni Association Faculty Awards Dinner on May 13.

The Alumni Distinguished Professorship honors the “best of the best” at NC State in both graduate and undergraduate instruction. The undergraduate awards were established in 1968; graduate awards were established in 1983. Awardees receive a $3,000 stipend for two years, a certificate and a door plaque denoting their honor.

The 2004-06 Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professors are:

  • Dr. Candy Beal of Raleigh, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education;
  • Dr. Bruce Branson of Raleigh, Department of Accounting, College of Management;
  • Dr. Robert I. Bruck of Cary, Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences;
  • Dr. Barry Goldfarb of Cary, Department of Forestry, College of Natural Resources;
  • Dr. Allen J. Riordan of Raleigh, Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; and
  • Dr. Stuart L. Warren of Raleigh, Department of Horticulture Science, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The 2004-06 Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professors are:

  • Dr. Mohamed Bourham of Raleigh, Department of Nuclear Engineering, College of Engineering; and
  • Meredith Davis of Raleigh, Department of Graphic Design, College of Design.

The Alumni Outstanding Research Awards were first presented in 1981. These awards provide a one-time stipend of $3,000 to each awardee. The nomination and selection process is conducted by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies and Vice Chancellor Dr. John Gilligan. Faculty who make significant advances in their field of study are eligible for this award.

The recipients of the 2004 Alumni Outstanding Research Awards are:

  • Dr. Virginia Aldige of Chapel Hill, Department of Sociology and Anthroplogy, College of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • Dr. Christopher B. Gorman of Cary, Department of Chemistry, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; and
  • Dr. Keith E. Gubbins of Raleigh, Department of Chemical Engineering, College of Engineering.

The Alumni Outstanding Outreach and Extension Awards, established in 1978, provide a one-time stipend of $3,000 to each awardee. The nomination and selection process is conducted by the Office of Extension and Engagement and Vice Chancellor Dr. Stephen Jones. Extension agents and specialists who make an outstanding effort to bring research and technology to the people and businesses of North Carolina are eligible.

The recipients of the 2004 Alumni Outstanding Extension and Outreach Awards are:

  • Ryan Boyles of Durham, State Climate Office, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences;
  • Dr. John Hubisz of Apex, Department of Physics, College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences; and
  • Dr. Alan Reiman of Cary, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, College of Education.

The Alumni Association also honors four faculty chosen from among the inductees into the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers. These awardees were selected by the NC State Senior Class Board of Trustees, chaired by Senior Class President Anup Shah, to receive further recognition and a one-time stipend of $1,000.

Inductees into the NC State Academy of Outstanding Teachers are:

  • Dr. Barbara Baines of Raleigh, Department of English, College of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • Dr. Nick Halpern of Raleigh, Department of English, College of Humanities and Social Sciences;
  • Dr. Eric Rotenberg of Raleigh, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering; and
  • Dr. Clyde E. Sorenson of Clayton, Department of Entomology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
