Bitzer elected
to electronics hall of fame
Dr. Donald Bitzer, Distinguished University Research Professor of Computer
Science, has been selected for induction into the Consumer Electronics
Hall of Fame.
Bitzer and two colleagues – Dr. Robert Willson and
the late Dr. Gene Slottow – invented
the flat plasma display while working together at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign in 1964. The invention was the forerunner of the high-definition
televisions of today.
In 2002, Bitzer was awarded an Emmy by the National Academy
of Television Arts and Sciences for his efforts in advancing television
technology.
Bitzer, Willson and Slottow
were among 12 individuals selected by the Consumer Electronics Association
into the hall of fame. CEA president
and CEO Gary Shapiro
noted that these individuals’ “inventions and leadership laid the
groundwork for today’s digital products and technologies, enhancing the
way consumers around the world work, live and play.”
