McKimmon Center
celebrates
30 years as area resource
Over the past three decades, the doors of the Jane S. McKimmon Center
have been busy: More than three million people have attended an educational
event there since the center opened in
1976.
The McKimmon Center was built
by the people and for the people. Named after a pioneer in extension
and continuing education, Jane S. McKimmon,
the McKimmon
Center has a proud history of providing quality educational programs to the people
of North Carolina. In the early 1950s, members of the Home Demonstration Clubs
throughout the state made a commitment to donate a portion of their “butter
and egg money” toward the cost of building the Extension Education Center.
In August 1966, the homemakers presented to Chancellor John T. Caldwell a check
for $100,000 to be used as “seed” money for the creation of the center.
Thirty
years – and million of visitors – later, the McKimmon Center
is fulfilling its promise far beyond early expectations. With the strong support
of university leadership, the cooperation of its many partners, and the dedicated
efforts of its staff, the future may be even brighter than the past.
