Repaving project will impact
main campus thoroughfares

More than 30 construction and roadwork projects will be taking place on campus this summer, including repaving that will impact two main thoroughfares through the heart of campus.

The Cates Avenue/Dan Allen Drive repaving project will have the largest immediate impact on campus traffic patterns. Dan Allen Drive is currently detoured between Thurman Drive and Sullivan Drive; however, the central campus parking lot located behind the Student Health Center will remain open. This detour is expected to last until approximately the end of the month. To help facilitate traffic flow, a four-way stop has been added to the intersection of Varsity Drive and Sullivan Drive.

“This summer could potentially be worse than last summer with all the construction and roadwork on campus,” parking enforcement manager Melissa Watkins told the Staff Senate at its May meeting.

Here’s a quick summary of work that will impact traffic and/or parking:

Cates/Dan Allen

The Cates and Dan Allen repaving project began May 15, and will take 90 days to complete. During this period, there will be no parking on Cates Avenue. Accessible parking for Talley Student Center will be relocated to the Reynolds Coliseum Carriageway. Additional “C” parking will be established on Morrill Drive, and the Coliseum Deck will be open for employee-permit parking this summer. Access to the parking lot behind Student Health Services will be maintained.

Cates will remain open to traffic, but will be reduced to one lane of westbound traffic from Jeter Drive to Dan Allen. The section between Jeter and Pullen will have one eastbound traffic lane open. Motorists attempting to access Dan Allen from Cates will only be able to turn right onto Dan Allen.

Watkins emphasized that if you don’t have to go down Dan Allen, then it will be best to avoid it completely and use Hillsborough Street, Western Boulevard, Pullen Road or Gorman Street to navigate campus.

“If you are trying to get from one side of campus to the other, take Gorman Street or Pullen Road; do not try to cut through on the interior of campus,” Watkins said.

Polk Hall/Riddick Labs

With the ongoing renovation of Polk Hall, all parking spaces on Stinson Drive between Polk and Broughton Halls will be eliminated. However, a traffic lane will remain open. During work on Riddick Labs, Yarbrough Drive will be closed from May 30-June 19 for the renovation.

Transit Service Rerouting

This summer, transit services will not be able to run through campus the way they normally do. All interior bus routes (except Centennial Shuttle #3) are rerouted to the campus perimeter. With the amount of construction activity, keeping buses off Dan Allen will help to maintain schedules and alleviate traffic congestion.

Centennial Shuttle #3 will maintain its normal route from Centennial Campus, but will be subject to rerouting as construction projects dictate. A scheduled detour will take place from May 22 through June 19. Wolfline riders can visit www.ncsu.edu/wolfline and use the Transit Visualization System (TVS) to check the location of their bus.

Pedestrian access to all these construction areas will be maintained throughout the summer. Visit the Transportation Department Web site for news and updates regarding the construction.
