In their only North Carolina appearance, legendary Motown studio band The Funk Brothers will perform Saturday, June 12, at the McKimmon Center.
Winners of the 2004 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, The Funk Brothers have played on more number one hits than the Beatles, the Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones and Elvis combined. Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, seeking the finest local musicians to play on the studio recordings for a new, independent label, brought together the band in 1959. The Funk Brothers played on “Bernadette,” “Stop in the Name of Love,” “My Girl,” and many more songs in their eventful career. After reuniting in 2000 for the documentary “Standing in the Shadows of Motown,” the band began to tour with featured singers in different legs of an international tour. This show will feature Frida Payne, from the Band of Gold, and Ali Ollie Woodson, former lead singer of The Temptations. A 6 p.m. reception feature heavy hors d’oeuvres and beverages, a question and answer session with band members, and an autograph-signing session. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $45 for current NC State faculty, staff and students, with a two-ticket limit for each valid university ID. General admission seats are $60. Advance tickets can be purchased at the Office of Professional Development in room 147 of the McKimmon Center. Posted June 4, 2004 |
