At the NC State Board of Trustees meeting on Monday, July 12, members approved the ground lease for a Centennial Campus golf course that will provide training for students enrolled in the turfgrass management and professional golf management (PGM) programs as well as a home for NC State’s men’s and women’s varsity golf teams. The $16 million project – which includes the golf course, research and training center, and clubhouse – will be entirely funded with private money and will encompass 193 acres on Centennial Campus. Construction is expected to begin in 2005 and the golf course is expected to open in 2007. In April, the board approved a fund-raising plan for the project. Board member D. McQueen Campbell and Nora Lynn Finch, senior associate director of athletics at NC State, will chair the campaign. Professional Golf Association (PGA) professionals Tim Clark and Carl Pettersson, former NFL star Roman Gabriel and women’s basketball coach Kay Yow are the campaign’s honorary chairs. Ed Weisiger Sr., chairman of Carolina Tractor and Equipment, is also a member of the campaign leadership group. No memberships will be sold at the public, 18-hole course. Budget estimates submitted to the board predict the course will operate in the black in its first year. Besides serving as a quality recreational facility for golfers, the course is a necessity for NC State’s innovative PGM program and program in turfgrass management. NC State is one of a few universities in the U.S. to offer a PGA-accredited bachelor of science degree in professional golf management. Students gain expertise in a variety of areas including turfgrass management; retail operations and merchandising; food and beverage management; personnel mangement; accounting; risk management; marketing; and customer services; in addition to teaching golf.
