NC State to hold new faculty orientation
The Office of the Provost invites all faculty hired since the fall of 2001 to attend the annual New Faculty Orientation to be held at the McKimmon Center on Aug. 14. This program will provide an overview of university services and resources for faculty members, as well as an opportunity to network with experienced faculty and administrators. Registration open for Instructional Technology program
The application period for the DELTA/Learning Technology Service Fall 2002 Instructional Technology Assistant Program (ITAP) is open through Aug. 9.

ITAP is an opportunity for NC State students and staff members to learn how to develop course Web sites using LTS-supported tools and resources. Program graduates will be able to provide technical assistance to faculty and staff who are developing online learning environments. Admission into ITAP is highly competitive. Applicants should be familiar with desktop-computing environments and must be working in partnership with an NC State faculty member on an instructional project requiring a Web resource. A maximum of 20 applicants are admitted each semester.

ITAP participants receive free training in a series of core and elective workshops. Participants must complete a supervised project to finish the program. Participants have approximately four months (18 weeks) to complete all of the requirements. Those in the fall 2002 ITAP session will have from Aug. 26 until Jan. 3 to complete the program requirements. For more information about ITAP, visit the Web site at: http://lts

DELTA/ LTS offers summer technology workshops
The DELTA/Learning Technology Service (LTS/DELTA) offers training for NC State faculty, staff and graduate students engaged in developing online instruction. DELTA/LTS workshops cover an expanded range of topics pertaining to instructional technology, Web page development, and the WebCT and WolfWare course management systems.

The following workshops are offered in the next two weeks, and will be held in the ITTC Labs:

  • WebCT 2 - Course Administration Level 1, Aug. 5, 1-3 p.m.

Postal Service introduces Qualified Business Reply
The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has introduced Qualified Business Reply Mail (QBRM) as a less costly alternative to Business Reply Mail (BRM). Under current rates, user departments can save five cents on each piece of QBRM mail. The USPS strictly controls the design of QBRM. Departments interested in receiving QBRM rates should contact Derrill Young at derrill_young@ncsu.edu or 515-9860. The goal of Mail Services is to have all current users of BRM begin using QBRM by the end of calendar year 2002 to avoid renewing the BRM permit.

2002 Service Recognition Luncheon set for Aug. 28
The 28th annual Service Recognition Luncheon will be held at noon on Aug. 28 at the McKimmon Center. This year 68 employees who achieved 25, 30, 35, 40 and 45 years of service during the time period of July 1, 2001 through June 30, 2002 will be recognized. Tickets for the luncheon are on sale and can be purchased for $7 from your ticket coordinator or Human Resources. Adult Basic Education in the workplace
On Sept. 10, Wake Technical Community College will begin conducting GED classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in the Morris Building – Large Conference Room. If you are interested in this program, please call Pat Grantham at 515-9822. Confirmation of receipt of the program enrollment form, with management/supervisory approval, is required prior to attending classes.

Multimedia Users Group sets fall schedule
After a summer recess, the Multimedia Users Group for Teaching and Learning will resume its meetings for fall 2002. Sessions, scheduled for the second Thursday of each month, are Sept. 12, Oct. 10, Nov. 14 and Dec 12. Meetings will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the ITTC Labs on the 2nd floor, East Wing of the D.H. Hill Library. For more information visit the Web at http://lts.ncsu.edu/multimedia.

Coates to retire Aug. 31
Gary Coates, assistant director of real estate, will retire Aug. 31 after 21 years of service to the university, including 11 years with the Real Estate office. Standing Committee appointments announced
On July 1, Chancellor Marye Anne Fox sent notification of appointment to the 25 University Standing Committees via e-mail. The e-mail addresses used were listed in the online directory. Nominations sought for Outstanding Service award
Nominations are being accepted for the Outstanding Service in Support of Teaching and Learning awards that will be presented at the third annual Celebration of Teaching and Learning on Oct. 22. Three awards will be presented: one faculty and two staff awards [one for SPA staff and one for EPA Professional (non-teaching) staff. Nominations should include a cover letter describing the accomplishments of the nominee, two supporting letters and the nominee’s resume. Nomination deadline is Sept. 1. Send nomination materials to Celebration of Teaching and Learning Committee at Campus Box 7111. Nominations can also be sent to karen_stclair@ncsu.edu, or faxed to 513-2442.

University issues water conservation alert
The City of Raleigh has issued mandatory conservation of water during the current period of severe drought. Facilities Operations is recommending that the university take the following steps to conserve this valuable resource:

  • Check for leaks in toilets and faucets and report immediately.
  • Store drinking water in the refrigerator to avoid trying to run it cool at the tap.
  • Take short showers at the gym or dorm.
  • Wash down of outside areas such as sidewalks, driveways and other impervious areas is prohibited.
  • Reduce irrigation.
  • Do not leave water running when not actively in use.
  • Dorm occupants should wash full loads in clothes washers.
  • Do not use water-cooled equipment.

These voluntary restrictions are recommended until the city manager gives public notice of their repeal.

Finance and Business Expo 2002 planned
The NC State Finance and Business Expo 2002 will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, in the Jane S. McKimmon Center. The purpose of the Expo is to showcase administrative applications and systems to NC State’s campus community and to constituent universities. Key Haven access available to employees
The Key Haven-Kerr Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is available for use by all NC State faculty and staff, including graduate assistants. Key Haven is a wooded peninsula on Kerr Lake, a one-hour drive north of Raleigh, with picnic tables, two small shelters, a concrete boat ramp, privies, camping sites and parking (no electricity or drinking water). Camping, picnicking, boating, swimming and fishing opportunities are available. The fee is $20 for new users and $15 for renewals.

Proposals sought for WRRI grants
Proposals are currently being solicited from faculty members of senior colleges and universities in North Carolina for grants under the Water Resources Research Institute's (WRRI) Fiscal Year 2003-2004. A complete application/instruction package for the WRRI grant program is available in a printable (.pdf) format at www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/CIL/WRRI/0304WRRICFP.pdf. Please follow instructions closely. All submitted proposals must be postmarked by Sept. 20. Applicants will be notified of the status of their proposals by February 15, 2003. The maximum award is $40,000, and anticipated starting date for projects is March 1, 2003. WRRI grants must be completed within a 12-month period, but investigators may apply for a 12-month renewal next year. Applications for renewal grants will be evaluated in the same manner as a proposal for new projects. Proposals for the WRRI program should be addressed to: WRRI-CFP-FY 2003-2004, Water Resources Research Institute, Campus Box 7912. Hard copies of the application/instructions packages may be obtained by calling WRRI at 515-2815 or sending email to Julie_Mason@ncsu.edu. Mallard retiring from Agricultural and Resource Economics
Faculty, staff and friends are invited to a retirement reception in honor of Pat Mallard, student services assistant in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics, from 3 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, in 3300 Nelson Hall. Mallard is retiring after 25 years of service to the university and the state.

Orientation for new graduate teaching assistants planned
The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning will host the annual Orientation to Teaching for New Graduate Teaching Assistants from 1 to 4:45 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 15, in 3400 Nelson Hall. Facilitated by a group of faculty and graduate mentors from various colleges and departments, this workshop partially fulfills training requirements for new TAs as outlined by the UNC General Administration. It also serves as the kick-off event in a semester-long program of mentoring activities for TAs.

It is intended for those who have not participated in previous years. Pre-registration is not necessary. Topics include handling lectures and labs, grading, helping individual students, finding and using campus resources, promoting active learning, and dealing with common TA crises. Volunteers needed for NC Senior Games
Volunteers are currently being sought to assist with the state finals of the North Carolina Senior Games, which will take place Sept. 30 through Oct. 6 in Raleigh. Archery, croquet, swimming and cycling are among the activities for which volunteer help is needed. No training is necessary, and all ages are welcome. Campus Child Care Center has openings
Campus Child Care Center, a licensed center serving NC State and the community, currently has openings available in many classrooms. Proposals are currently being solicited from faculty members for grants under the N.C. Water Quality Workgroup program (NCWQW) for Fiscal Year 2002-2003. A complete application/instruction package for the WQW grant program is available in pdf format at www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/

. Please follow instructions closely, and note that collaboration with a division of the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources is required.

The maximum award is $75,000, and anticipated starting date for projects is March 1, 2003. WQW grants are for a 12-month period, with the possibility of a one-year, no-cost extension. Morris retiring after 39 years of service
Carole Morris, research technician in the Department of Poultry Science, will retire August 31 after 39 years of service to the university, including service in the Department of Entomology. Student recruiting workshop planned
The offices of Undergraduate Admissions, Undergraduate Affairs, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and Park Scholarships will host a new student workshop for all university faculty and staff members who have an interest in and/or responsibility for recruiting new freshman and transfer students. All colleges, schools and departments are encouraged to send representatives.

The workshop will be held from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12, in Room 3118 of Talley Student Center. Coffee and snacks with be provided starting at 8:30 a.m. Undergraduate Admissions will review university admissions goals for the class of 2007 as well as recruiting plans and strategies, which include high school visitation programs, national college recruiting fairs and targeted campus visitation programs. Information on Financial Aid, Merit Scholarships, and Park Scholarships also will be provided. Copies of all new admissions recruiting publications will be available. Pollard retiring after 33 years of service

Guitar lessons scheduled
Four guitar classes - three for beginners and one for intermediates - will be offered this fall at NC State. Students will learn pop, country and folk accompaniment styles, as well as their history and theory. Beginner classes will be held each Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and each Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. and 5:45 p.m. The intermediate class will be held each Tuesday at 7:45. Classes are one hour in length and last for 13 weeks. Classes begin August 27 and 28. Cost is $150. Guitars are provided for participants who do not have one. Shared Leave donations needed
Laurie Kovaleski, advancement services, has been approved for participation in the Shared Leave program. Those wishing to donate leave should complete Form SL-2, Authorization to Donate Leave, and forward it to Salary Administration, Campus Box 7210. Engineering faculty meeting planned
The College of Engineering will hold its fall faculty meeting from 3 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, September 25, in Room 216 Mann Hall.

Bookstore holding regalia sale
A faculty academic regalia sale will be held at the NCSU bookstore from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 5. This will be the last opportunity to purchase custom regalia and receive it in time for the December graduation. A Jostens representative, trained in academic dress and protocol, will be on hand to assist with measurements and orders and answer related questions. University Mail Services controls the use of these permits, and annual fees are paid for authorization to use these permits in accordance with US Postal Service guidelines. Incorrectly formatted BRM or QBRM is considered a violation of USPS policy and could warrant the university being placed on probation.
