University
moves up eight spots
in U.S. News rankings
NC State moved up
eight places on the list of “best national universities” in this year’s
U.S. News and World Report college rankings, from 86th last year to 78th
on the list
of 248 national universities, public and private.
In addition, NC State
moved from 39th to 34th among public universities, and moved from 38th
to
33rd on the list of “best values.” NC State ranked
fifth among public universities on the “best value” list. This list
compares “a school’s academic quality … to the net cost
of attendance for a student who receives the average level of need-based
financial
aid.”
“NC State does well
in rankings compared to other public universities and especially in
comparison to other research-extensive land-grant universities,” said
Chancellor James L. Oblinger. “We’re pleased that we moved
up in these rankings, but our mission as a land-grant university and our
responsibility
to the people of North Carolina remains to continually improve educational
quality, research and our service to the state. The activities and dedication
of many
individuals across campus fuel our institutional improvement.”
The
annual rankings are based on 12 categories, which include such items
as freshman retention, graduation rate, acceptance rates and alumni
giving.
