Staff Senate elects new leadership

J.C. Boykin, a contracts administrator with Facilities Operations, was voted chair-elect of the NC State Staff Senate for the 2005-06 academic year at the group’s August meeting. With his election, Boykin will move into the chair’s position in one year.

As chair-elect, Boykin will work closely with current chair Melissa Watkins to better understand the responsibility he will undertake when he becomes chair in 2006-07.

“It’s truly an honor to be elected by my peers for this important role,” said Boykin, who has worked at NC State since 1992. “The chair-elect position is a one-year period to get a feel for the direction we are going in, learn more about what the issues of concern to the staff are and strengthen relationships with the university administration to prepare myself to lead the organization the following year.”

Also elected to leadership posts for 2005-06:

  • Miriam Hines, an administrative officer in the Office of Research and Graduate Studies, was elected vice chair. She has served as a staff senator since 2003.
  • Jon Barnwell, a crime prevention officer with Campus Police, was elected parliamentarian. Barnwell was first elected to staff senate in 2000 and has served as chair-elect, chair and past chair.
  • Debbie Hunt, an administrative officer in Research Administration and Sponsored Programs, was re-elected secretary. She has served as a staff senator since 2003.

In accepting the gavel from outgoing chair Laura Massengill, incoming chair Melissa Watkins vowed “to honor the confidence that you’ve shown in electing me to this position.

“It’s only together that we can propose solutions to issues and put those forward,” said Watkins, who has worked in the transportation department for more than 20 years and currently is the campus parking enforcement manager. “I’m just a vessel that you have put in front of you to help lead this group and represent the staff before the administrators, in the community, on the campus and throughout the state.”

Watkins also presented Massengill with a plaque recognizing her service to the university as Staff Senate chair in 2004-05.

“It has been an honor to represent the staff of North Carolina State University as your chair,” Massengill said. “This past year has been busy, very rewarding and exciting.”
