In the area around the Coliseum Deck, a series of one-way streets should
make campus roads more inviting. From Pullen Road, newly opened Dunn
Avenue to Jeter Drive is now one-way westbound (toward the bookstore).
Jeter Drive flows one-way southbound to Cates Avenue, which is one-way
east to Pullen Road. Cates Avenue remains two-way traffic west of Jeter
Drive.
A new traffic signal at the Cates Avenue/Pullen Road intersection will
greatly aid safety and the ability to make left (north) turns on Pullen
Road.
“We’ve needed this signal,” said Slade McCalip, assistant
director of planning and operations in NC State’s Transportation
Department. “It’s part of our effort to more actively and
safely manage traffic flow, which also helps our Wolfline buses maintain
their schedules.”
Pullen Road itself, which was closed from Western Boulevard to Cates
Avenue throughout the summer, is now open for the start of classes.
Also, when leaving campus on Morrill Road at Western Boulevard, motorists
will now notice three lanes to use instead of two. The leftmost lane
allows left turns only. The center lane allows cars to go straight through
to Avent Ferry Road on the other side of Western Boulevard. The rightmost
lane allows motorists to either go straight through to Avent Ferry Road
or turn right onto westbound Western Boulevard.
Earlier this summer, a three-way stop was installed at the intersection
of Dan Allen Drive and Sullivan Drive. The stop will allow motorists,
and in particular the Wolfline buses, to make left-hand turns onto Sullivan
Drive, which in turn will clear Dan Allen Drive for better traffic flow
throughout the corridor.
Through all the improvements, transportation officials hope to help
students, faculty, staff and visitors better navigate the campus.
Pedestrian traffic, too, will be different this fall. The Free Expression
Tunnel was closed in June for accessibility additions and other renovations.
It will remain closed until March 2006.
