BOT proceeds with conference center plan

At its meeting on Friday (Sept. 20), the NC State Board of Trustees unanimously approved a committee recommendation to proceed with plans for a conference center.

The recommendation, which was approved by a committee of the Board of Trustees at a meeting last month, endorses plans for an executive conference center and golf course on Centennial Campus. The project would cost nearly $14 million less than earlier versions of the conference center, would reach stable income levels by its fourth year of operation and would require no subsidy from the state to build.

HVS International, a hotel and hospitality-consulting firm reviewed a previous analysis done by PFK Consulting. The center is expected to open in the first quarter of 2005.

In other news from the Board of Trustees:

  • The board elected the executive committee for the 2002-2003 academic year. Peaches G. Blank was selected to serve as chairwomen, while Richard Robb and Edward E. Hood Jr. were tabbed to serve as first vice chair and second vice chair, respectively. Vernon Malone was elected as the secretary of the board, while Clare Kristofco was selected as assistant secretary.

The board also elected Richard Vaughn as the fifth member of the executive committee. Vaughn will serve in place of the immediate past chair, Smedes York, whose term on the Board of Trustees expired last year.

  • The board was presented a banner that flew on the Space Shuttle from Amanda England Dixon, an engineering graduate. During her time at NC State, Dixon led a team of students in a research competition that won the opportunity to have the banner fly aboard the Shuttle Atlantis.
