No paper? No problem. Since NC State implemented a Web-based application system for all staff job openings on campus in mid-June, the number of applicants for those vacancies has more than doubled, according to Human Resources officials. For the month of May – the final month of the former application system – HR received 4,861 bids for staff openings. In July – the first full month using the paperless system – HR processed 9,549 applications. In August, the number of applications rose to 10,469, a 115 percent increase from the month of May. In reporting the application increases to the Staff Senate at its September meeting, University Treasurer Kathy Hart said the process has “strengthened the credentials of candidates for jobs that are open across campus.” Rick Williams, employment manager in the HR office, attributed the increase to the computer literacy of the applicant pool as well as services and outreach programs sponsored by the HR office to assist those who do not have access to a computer. HR set up six computer kiosks in its office for people to complete an application, and provided assistance for those who lack computer skills. HR officials had some initial concerns about how the new system would impact the diversity of the number of applicants, but early reports show that the system is attracting a diverse applicant pool. “Our demographics are just as diverse, if not more diverse, as they were before,” Williams said. “We are getting good representation from all ethnic and racial groups. “We also noticed we are getting a good response for all different types of positions. There was some concern that we might not get as many applications for our lower pay-grade positions, but that hasn’t been the case.” The surge in the number of applications has not put added strain on HR staff, Williams said. “We’ve been able to handle it so far,” Williams said. “It’s a more efficient system that makes it easier for us to screen the applications so we can handle more volume.”
