LITRE Advisory Board
issues call for proposals

The LITRE Advisory Board has released a call for proposals for LITRE Grants.

The new LITRE Grants program is central to the university’s Learning In a Technology Rich Environment (LITRE) Plan, which will guide innovations in teaching with technology over the next several years.

LITRE was adopted a few years ago as part of NC State’s affirmation of reaccreditation process with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

“ LITRE Grants encourage faculty to try new things with technology,” said Lavon Page, chair of the LITRE Advisory Board. “LITRE is a long-term process, and what works well in the early years can be scaled up and expanded to other areas of campus.”

The deadline for pre-proposals is Oct. 1, and the awards for this year will be announced on Dec 15. While there are no firm guidelines on amounts requested, Page says he anticipates that most of the awards will be in the $6,000-$10,000 range. Funds awarded this year must be used by June 30, 2005.

The purpose of the LITRE Grants program is to encourage faculty inquiry and investigation into improving student learning using technology.

When asked what the criteria for judging proposals would be, Page said that the emphasis for LITRE from the beginning has been student learning.

“ That means we’ll be looking for the proposals that appear to us to have the best chance of promoting student learning at NCSU over the long haul,” he said.

Page says the reviewing of the proposals will be handled by a faculty committee.

“If we’re aiming for student learning outcomes, we have to look to the faculty to judge what appears most likely to bring results,” he said.

Complete information about the LITRE Grants program, as well as links to the RFP and pre-proposal form, may be found at the LITRE Web site: http://litre.ncsu.edu.
