New faculty orientation
program expanded

In an effort to help new faculty members to NC State gain a stronger sense of community and better understand the university’s processes, the New Faculty Orientation was enhanced and expanded this year.

Instead of the one-day programs of the past, this year the 26 participants spent three days (Aug. 11-13) getting a more detailed look at NC State.

The first day was spent solely on teaching, where topics such as “Mistakes New Faculty Members Commonly Make and Strategies for Avoiding Them” and “How Students Learn, How Teachers Teach, and What Often Goes Wrong” were discussed. The second day was spent solely on research issues, and the third day was spent entirely on other issues of relevance, such as tenure policy, extension and engagement, and funding. The faculty were also able to visit with more than two dozen campus groups with whom they are likely to have involvement during their careers here.

“The program allows us to introduce the new faculty to life in the NC State community, to provide a welcome for them, and to help them connect with groups on campus,” said Dr. Alton Banks, who helped lead the program.

Facets of the program also helped introduce the new faculty members to the collaborative process at NC State, as the group was asked during the research portion of the orientation to work together on a bi-disciplinary research proposal.
