Winwood named director
of Centennial Campus

Dr. David Winwood has been named director of Centennial Campus, effective Oct. 11. Winwood, who served in various capacities at NC State from 1998-2002, rejoins the university from Ohio State.

At Ohio State, he was associate vice president for knowledge transfer and commercialization, supervising the activities of the Office of Technology Licensing and Technology Partnerships. He also served on several city and regional economic development advisory boards.

Dr. John Gilligan, NC State’s vice chancellor for research and graduate studies, announced Winwood’s hiring and said the director’s job responsibilities will be broadened slightly.

“There will be more of an economic development component to the job,” Gilligan said. “We’ll look to the director to create the kind of government-industry-university partnerships that will foster economic development for North Carolina.”

In his previous stay at NC State, Winwood held several positions relative to technology transfer and research. He said “the time is right” to add economic development to the Centennial Campus director’s responsibilities.

“Several departments and colleges at NC State have economic development components,” he said. “Traditional extension development, research and technology licensing come immediately to mind. We have to determine how to help bring these elements together and match them with the interests of organizations outside the campus.”

In addition to his university technology licensing experience at Ohio State, NC State and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Winwood has experience in business development and early-stage drug development activities at companies in Research Triangle Park.

He holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in chemistry from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, and a Master of Arts degree in liberal studies from NC State. He has more than 20 peer-reviewed publications and reviews in the areas of synthetic chemistry and drug design and delivery, as well as numerous invited presentations.
