Barr to head
new management department
Steve Barr has been named head of the new Department of Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) in the College of Management.
The MIE department was established this summer to bring together the college’s faculty members whose research and teaching explore the dynamic fields of strategic management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and the relationships between them, said Ira R. Wiess, dean of the college.
“These faculty members form a critical mass of knowledge and expertise in these closely related fields,” Weiss said. “Forming the MIE department is a logical progression of the college’s founding mission, which is to focus on the management of technology across all business disciplines.
“Our faculty in the departments of accounting, business management, economics – and now management, innovation and entrepreneurship – work together to fulfill that mission by developing academic and research programs that prepare individuals to lead in the technology-driven, global 21st century business environment.”
“In his six years of service as head of the business management department, Steve Barr has had a significant role in helping to develop the college’s expertise in the areas of management, innovation and entrepreneurship through his leadership and recruitment of key faculty members,” Weiss said. “We look forward to Steve’s continued leadership as head of this new department.”
Barr, professor of business management, has a doctorate in organizational behavior from the University of Iowa. He has served on the faculty at NC State since 1995, focusing his research and teaching on the management of individuals and groups, the introduction and management of organizational change, and innovation.
He is a member of the Academy of Management, Southern Management Association, Decision Sciences Institute, and American Psychological Association, and has worked with many organizations to design and implement organizational change.
