Chancellor, diversity AVP
guests of Faculty Senate

Faculty Senate opened its 53rd session on Aug. 29 with a
welcome from Chancellor James Oblinger and a message from NC State’s new assistant vice provost for faculty and staff diversity, Dr. Marcia Gumpertz.

The chancellor updated the senate on the events of what he called “a very productive summer,” including legislative items, the hiring of new deans and the redesign of the NC State home page.

“There were several items in the state budget that were quite notable this past legislative session for NC State and for the entire university system,” Oblinger said. Major items in the budget that impact faculty included pay raises of 6 percent and the allocation of $5 million for faculty recruitment and retention. Non-budget items of note included enrollment funding being provided in the continuation budget, and the number of courses employees can take as part of the tuition waiver program being increased from two to three.

The chancellor also spoke about the hiring of four new deans. Dr. Toby Parcell is the new dean of CHASS, Dr. Louis A. Martin-Vega is the new dean of the College of Engineering, Dr. Robert Brown is the new dean of the College of Natural Resources and Dr. Teri Lomax will serve as dean of the Graduate School.

Oblinger gave a quick update to faculty senate on the redesign of NC State’s home page. “I think we all recognize how important a method of communication the site is to the university,” Oblinger said. He thanked all faculty and staff for their representation in the redesign effort and emphasized that the new site will help centralize communication at the university.

Gumpertz, the university’s new assistant vice provost for faculty and staff diversity, told the group, “I will be working to increase the number of faculty and staff from historically underrepresented groups and to promote the retention and professional success of these groups, as well as all our employees.”

Gumpertz will devote some of her time to assessing the effectiveness of diversity education and training at NC State and to helping create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all employees. For more information about faculty and staff diversity, visit www.ncsu.edu/diversity.
