A proposal currently making its way through the university's approval process would reduce the cost of parking for those purchasing "BP" parking permits. The change would cut the annual price of "BP" stickers from $327 down to $300. Tom Kendig, NC State's director of transportation, said the change was considered after permit holders expressed their concern with the pricing at a public meeting this summer. "The 'BP' is currently priced equivalently with the 'B' permit, but does not allow the user the flexibility of the 'B'," Kendig said. "Some of those with 'BP' passes thought that was unfair, and after examining the situation, so did we. The current proposal would price the 'BP' in-between the 'B' and the 'C' permits (currently $275)." Charlene Hayes, associate vice chancellor for human resources, said the "BP" was originally priced the same as the "B" because there were more spaces available in "BP" lots than in other areas, but that is no longer the case. "The reality is with construction going on now, the 'B' is spilling over into the 'BP' more than we expected," Hayes said. "There's not as much likelihood of a 'BP' permit holder getting a space in the 'BP' zone now, so the advantage of having that permit has been reduced." The three major "BP" lots are located at Hillsborough Square (behind Darryl's restaurant), North Hall and Jeter Drive (beside Reynolds Coliseum. A total of 517 spaces on campus are designated as "BP." The change was approved at an Executive Officers Meeting last week, and will next be considered by the University Council. If it is approved there, the Board of Trustees will give final consideration to the proposal at its November meeting. Kendig
said the university has discussed making the reduction retroactive to
August 16, the beginning of the academic year. A
total of 440 current "BP" permit holders would be affected
by the change.
