NC State welcomes five
new department heads


Five people have been appointed to department head positions at NC State, two in the College of Design and three in the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

In the College of Design, Thomas Barrie has been appointed the new director of the School of Architecture, while Denise Gonzales Crisp has been named the new chair of the Department of Graphic Design.

A registered architect, Barrie was formerly a professor and coordinator of The Detroit Studio at Lawrence Technological University in Michigan. He holds a master of philosophy degree in architectural history/theory from the University of Manchester in England, a master's degree in architecture from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and a bachelor's degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Barrie received a 2002 Honor Award from AIA-Detroit for the "Architect's Studio" in Royal Oak, Mich.

Crisp was a former senior designer at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., where she was invited to be one of five core graduate faculty in the newly formed Media Design Program. She participated in revising California Institute of the Arts' graphic design curriculum while an adjunct faculty member there. She also directed and designed collateral and recruitment materials for Art Center College of Design. She holds a master of fine arts in graphic design from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, Calif., and a bachelor of fine arts from the Art Center College of Design.

In the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, new leaders have been chosen for the mathematics, statistics, and marine, earth & atmospheric science departments.

Dr. Bernard Mair has joined the university as head of the Mathematics Department, after serving in faculty positions at Texas Tech, Penn State, Emory, and Dartmouth universities. As a faculty member at the University of Florida, he was associate chair, graduate coordinator and director of the university's Center for Applied Mathematics. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of the West Indies and his Ph.D. at McGill University.

Dr. Sastry Pantula has been named head of the Statistics Department, where he's been a faculty member since 1982 and served as director of graduate programs as well as assistant department head. Recently named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the Indian Statistical Institute in Calcutta, India, and his Ph.D. at Iowa State University.

Dr. John Fountain will head the Department of Marine, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, after serving as chairman of the geology department at The University at Buffalo (formerly the State University of New York at Buffalo). He earned his bachelor's degree at California Polytechnic State University, and his master's and Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
