An exhibition featuring the work of six contemporary textile artists entitled "Technology as Catalyst: Textile Artists on the Cutting Edge," is currently on display at the Gallery of Art & Design. The exhibit runs through Dec. 18. This exhibition presents the work of Lia Cook, Junco Sato Pollack, Cynthia Schira, Hitoshe Ujiie, Carol Westfall and NC State's own Susan Brandeis, professor of Textiles at the College of Design. These artists use digital printing and/or digital weaving equipment to create their art. These technologies allow the artists to investigate traditional textile concepts with a new flexibility and range of creativity. Recent technological advances have allowed these artists to open up an infinite range of possibilities in regards to scale and gradations of color, as well as new combinations of weave structures and limitless image sources. Images can be manipulated, developed, discarded or retained with a speed previously unimaginable in this medium, which has until recently been an extremely labor-intensive and time-consuming pursuit. The works in this exhibition illustrate how these artists use the interrelationship between hi-tech equipment and handwork to express themselves in the rapidly changing world of textile art. This exhibition is free and open to the public. The Gallery of Art & Design is located in the Talley Student Center. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 2 to 8 p.m. The gallery is closed Monday, Tuesday and university holidays. For
