Dr. James Rice, professor of zoology and extension fisheries specialist, has been named chairman of the NC State Marine Sciences Council. He replaces Dr. Michael Stoskopf, professor of clinical sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine, who stepped aside to devote more time to other academic activities. Rice has served on the Marine Sciences Council since 1998, and is also the chairman of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences marine resources faculty. NC States marine sciences faculty bring a diverse wealth of expertise to bear on the issues and problems affecting our coastal environment and marine resources, which are extremely important to the future of North Carolina, Rice said. I want to raise the visibility of our strengths in marine science both within the university community and beyond, and work with the provost, the colleges and the marine sciences faculty to further enhance our effectiveness. Accomplishments during Stoskopfs tenure included the completion of the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology (CMAST) building, organization of the undergraduate curriculum in marine sciences, academic agreements with Carteret Community College and the formation of a universitywide dive safety program, among other activities. The
NC State Marine Sciences Council was established in 1995 to advise the
chancellor and provost on affairs affecting marine science research,
outreach and teaching. It includes faculty representatives from CALS,
PAMS, Engineering and CVM.
