Dance company performance,
drama on tap for tonight

Both Center Stage and University Theatre will host events tonight, with the Bangarra Dance Theatre performing at Stewart Theatre and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” opening a nine-performance run at Thompson Theatre.

The Bangarra Dance Theatre is an Australian company that blends traditional Aboriginal history and culture with sensuous contemporary dance. The company will perform its new work called “Bush,” a celebration of dance, ritual and music inspired by Dreamtime creation stories of North East Arnhem Land. Through the company, the audience witnesses nature’s sacred poetry – reptilian creatures slither from dark caves, a caterpillar transforms into a moth, a cloud of feathers float down to coat a glistening body.

Tickets for the performance are $22-27 for the general public; $17.50-21.50 for NC State faculty and staff; $13 for students and $8 for NC State students.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was August Wilson’s first Broadway-staged production and winner of the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It captures the history and richness of life found throughout his nine works chronicling African-American life in the 20th century. A drama with music, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” is a culmination of backstage bickering, wanton desires and tremendous rage leading to a startling ending as it explores racism in the 1920s.

Performances will be held Oct. 28-31 and Nov. 3-7. Show time is 8 p.m. except on Oct. 31 and Nov. 7, which will be 3 p.m. matinees. Ticket prices range from $12-16 for adults, senior citizens, students, faculty and staff, and members of the NC State Alumni Association; $6 for NC State students. Patrons should note that the performance contains adult language and situations.

Tickets for either the Bangarra Dance Theatre or “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” can be purchased through Ticket Central at 515-1100.
