NC State will host a symposium to discuss future plans for the surrounding woodlands and wetlands on Lake Raleigh at NC State’s Centennial Campus. The symposium will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 16, at the McKimmon Center. The university’s Campus Environmental Sustainability Team, a committee of faculty, staff and students headed by Dr. Larry Nielsen, dean of the College of Natural Resources, is sponsoring the symposium to discuss the history of the woods at Lake Raleigh, its current ecological condition, its current uses, and the possibilities for future uses. At the symposium, faculty, students, administrators and a representative of the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will make short presentations about the land. Dr. John Wear, director of the Catawba College Center for the Environment and the 2003 N.C. Conservationist of the Year, will give a keynote address at 1:30 p.m. Attendees will also conduct a charrette, or an intensive, short-term brainstorming session, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The charrette is a time-honored tradition among design professionals. University representatives will also discuss the campus master plan and how the woods at Lake Raleigh fit into the plan. For more information on the symposium, click here.
