Noted artist, sculptor to speak
at NC State's College of Design

James Carpenter, an artist and sculptor involved with new and emerging glass and material technologies, will speak at the North Carolina State University College of Design, at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11, in Kamphoefner Auditorium. A reception is set for 5:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Carpenter's interest in architecture began at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he ultimately received a BFA in sculpture in 1972. In 1978 he formed James Carpenter Design Associates in New York City after completing an extended consultancy with the Corning Glass Works. His interest in architecture and structure has evolved into a unique design practice which ranges from technical glass and materials consulting to curtain walls, roofing systems, bridges and sculptures.

The American Institute of Architects conferred its 1991 Institute Honor on Carpenter as "an artist whose rare, unsurpassed technical expertise and sculptor's sensitivity have moved him to explore and express the dramatic interrelationships of glass and light that have become indispensable ingredients of great architecture. With his intuitive understanding of the built environment, he transforms glass into art, forming a union between the transparent and the tangible that respects and enhances architectural design."

In addition to being an artist considered to be a foremost innovator in materials technologies, Carpenter and his studio have worked collaboratively with major architects and engineers in the United States and abroad on significant building projects and have received many important public arts commissions. The studio's responsibilities include close collaboration with associated engineers to develop the architectonic expression of the work including all stages of design, construction documentation, fabrication and installation.

Lectures concerning architecture are co-sponsored by the American Institute of Architects-Triangle. For more information, call the School of Architecture at 919/515-8350.
