to speak at NC State on Friday

Gen. Richard. B. MyersGen. Richard B. Myers, current chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, will visit NC State on Friday and present the keynote address at the first annual Gen. Henry Hugh Shelton Leadership Forum.

He will be speaking at a 12:15 p.m. luncheon at the McKimmon Center. Prior registration is required.

"As principal military advisor to the president, Gen. Myers is at the forefront of our global peacekeeping and military strategy development. The opportunity to attract Gen. Myers to NC State at this critical time is representative of the importance of the Shelton Leadership Initiative in shaping our present and next generation of leaders," said Dr. Mike Davis, NC State's assistant vice chancellor for extension and engagement.

The Leadership Forum will begin with at 9:30 a.m., and will focus on values-based leadership. It is one of several program offerings of the Gen. The initiative offers executive development programs, faculty and student leadership development experiences and youth development conferences.

Shelton, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and a Congressional Gold Medal recipient, will make his presentation on values-based leadership at 10 a.m., immediately following an introduction from NC State Chancellor Marye Anne Fox.

Also speaking will be retired Army Black Hawk pilot Michael Durant, who will give the capnote presentation at 3:15 p.m. On Oct. 3, 1993, while piloting an MH-60 Black Hawk helicopter in Mogadishu, Somalia, Durant was shot down and held captive by hostile forces for 11 days. Those events are the basis of the Hollywood film "Black Hawk Down."

The leadership forum will feature three concurrent educational seminars from 2 to 3 p.m.:

  • Perspectives on Leadership for the New Economy
  • Leadership, Ethics and Public Service: Developing Visionary Leaders in Public and Service Education
  • U.S. Special Operations Forces: Developing Leadership Without Equal

The forum will also include a performance by the 82nd Airborne Division All-American Chorus.
