Chancellor forwards tuition,
fees increase to BOT

Chancellor Marye Anne Fox has recommended that the NC State Board of Trustees approve a three-year, $300 campus-initiated tuition increase, effective for 2004-05, 2005-06, and 2006-07. Fox said she also supported the package of student fee increases proposed for 2004-05. The Trustees will consider the increase proposals at their Nov. 20-21 meeting.

Fox said that she had considered the recommendations in all of the reports from the Tuition Task Force and the Fee Review Committee, comments from students at the Tuition Town Hall Meeting on November 2, and the input of the Faculty Senate and University Council. She asked the Board of Trustees to:

Approve a Campus Initiated Tuition Increase of $300 per year for each of the following academic years: 2004-2005, 2005-2006, and 2006-2007.
Approve a tuition increase of $4,000 for the 2004-2005 academic year for the master’s of business administration (MBA) program, and an increase of $4,000 for the 2004-2005 academic year for the master’s of accounting (MAC) program.
Approve all of the proposed student fee increases for 2004-2005, the proposed elimination of the current Carmichael Gymnasium indebtedness fee after the spring 2004 semester, and the continuation of existing fees for which no increase was requested.

In a November 4 memo to the board, Fox said that one of NC State’s foremost priorities is to provide access to an affordable education for a broad range of students, including those who have financial need. The university will continue adherence to this ideal, while striving to maintain the quality of the educational experience, she said. "As you know, it is difficult to balance access and affordability while ensuring the necessary resources to advance our academic excellence initiatives. Yet, I believe the proposals before you are the correct course for NC State and ask for your approval."

If approved, the Campus-Initiated Tuition Increase proposal and the increases in student fees will be forwarded to the University of North Carolina Board of Governors for consideration at its February 2004 meeting.
