NC State employees
raise $453,000 for charities

NC State employees pledged $453,000 for various charities during the recently completed State Employees Combined Campaign, surpassing the university’s 2004 goal of $444,000.

The university joins other state agencies and universities each year in raising money for hundreds of charitable organizations that receive funding through the campaign.

Dr. Johnny C. Wynne, interim dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, chaired the 2004 campaign on the NC State campus.

“Our impressive achievement and success result directly from the combined efforts of a talented, dedicated group of university employees who volunteer their time to organize and conduct the university campaign,” Wynne said. “Our unit coordinators and team captains have done a superlative job in making sure that all NC State employees have an opportunity to support causes and organizations that are important to them.”

North Carolina’s consolidated university system typically raises more than half of the statewide campaign pledges. In 2003, university system employees pledged $2.4 million of the $4.2 million contributed by all state employees. NC State employees contributed 17.3 percent of the total dollars raised in 2003 and will likely repeat or exceed that share in 2004. Within the university system, NC State is usually the second highest contributor among all campuses.

The 2004 campaign kicked off on the NC State campus in August and ended in late October.

“To say I am pleased with our results this year would be an understatement,” said NC State Chancellor James Oblinger. “I know how hard our campus volunteers have worked in planning campaigns in their colleges and departments, and I am grateful for their efforts. Most importantly, I’m proud that our university is a leader in this annual campaign.”

Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the campaign, which was created by former Gov. Jim Hunt. The 2005 university chair for the NC State effort is Dr. Carol Pope, professor of curriculum and instruction in the College of Education.
