Campus bike
planning
getting back on track
As the cost of gasoline skyrocketed this fall, many students, faculty
and staff members began utilizing bicycles to get around campus. The
resulting increase in cycling traffic has raised
safety concerns, and is part of the driving force behind the initiative to
get the campus bike plan back on track.
Originally part of the NC
State Master Plan, the campus bike plan was completed a year ago and
scheduled for
implementation over a five-year period. The projects
were to be partially funded by Transportation’s revenue from parking fines.
However,
a recent court ruling that revenues from fines must be given to the public
school system left Transportation scrambling to find alternative solutions.
“We’re definitely moving forward with the bike plan,” said
Adena Messinger, planner in Transportation. “We’ve just had
to retool the plans a little bit.”
Part of the retooling has involved
getting campuswide input into identifying strategies that will have the
most impact on campus traffic. In October,
Transportation held two meetings for the Centennial Campus community to offer
suggestions.
“The biggest concern seems to be for folks trying to get to and
from Centennial Campus,” says Messinger. “We’re working
on safety issues related to that.”
In the meantime, Transportation
has established a listserv and Web
site where cyclists can go for more
information. To subscribe to the listserv,
go to
http://lists.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/lists, select “ALL” and then “ncsubug.”
