Caldwell Programs shifting focus
to current students

In an effort to identify and develop talented students with proven records of academic success and service at NC State, the Caldwell Programs are changing gears.

In 2005, the award package for Caldwell Fellows will increase to $20,000 over three years as the Caldwell Programs phase out high school selection – the prestigious John T. Caldwell Alumni Scholars program – to focus on students already enrolled at NC State. Caldwell Fellow Scholarships are the only universitywide merit awards for first-year students at NC State.

Caldwell Fellows are funded by endowments through the NC State Alumni Association.

A select group of 25 new Fellows will receive a financial award that includes three years of an annual tuition stipend, as well as self-development stipends for experiences in study abroad, professional development, leadership development and service.

The Caldwell Fellows selection process strives to identify first-year students at NC State who will benefit from the program and add to its vitality. Selection is based on five criteria: leadership potential; academic performance; community and service; commitment to personal growth; and an understanding of the program and commitment to maximizing the program’s opportunities.

The application period for the 2005 Fellows selection process is now open. The program is looking for a pool of applicants who represent the rich diversity of the NC State campus. The program is seeking applicants from all colleges at NC State, and encourages college representatives to contact their promising students with application information.

In addition to applications from first-year students, applications will be accepted from transfer students who, after their first semester at NC State, meet the selection criteria and still have at least two years to complete in their undergraduate work. This addition introduces another unique dimension to the Caldwell Program, with a merit award and leadership development opportunity which has not before existed for transfer students.

Program applicants must complete the application form and essays, and submit a letter of support from someone who can attest to their character, potential, and commitment to the ideals of the program.

Applications must be received in the Caldwell Office in 2120 Pullen Hall by 5 p.m. on Jan. 14. Finalists will be interviewed on Saturday, Feb. 19, and the recipients will be announced on Wednesday, Feb. 23.

For more information, contact Dr. Janice E. Odom at 515-3837.
