Barbara Brown Edsall, former bookstore employee, died May 31. She was 63.

Born June 5, 1942, in Raleigh, Edsall worked at the NCSU Bookstores and the Centennial Store as a manager before leaving in 2005.

Edsall is survived by her parents, Barbara and Lawrence Brown; a sister, Sandy Scott; a brother, Buster; a son, Robert; and two grandsons.

Bert Whitley Westbrook, former psychology professor, died June 6. He was 74.

Born in Sampson County, Westbrook grew up in Onslow County and earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and English from High Point College. He earned his master’s degree in educational administration from the University of South Carolina and his doctorate in educational research and testing from Florida State University.

Westbrook joined the faculty at NC State in 1966 and served as a professor for 38 years before retiring in 2004. In 2000, Westbrook received NC State’s Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah; two brothers, Sammy and Frank; two sons, Paul and James; and three grandchildren.

Isaac Franklin “Frank” Ormond III, associate professor of physical education, died June 12. He was 55.

A native of Goldsboro, Ormond received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his master’s degree from Virginia Tech. He was a U.S. Army veteran with the 82nd Airborne.

Ormond is survived by his parents, Frank and Lib; three brothers, Macon, Conway and David; and a sister, Mandy.

Harold Arch Ramsey, former professor of animal science, died June 12. He was 78.

A native of Uniontown, Kan., Ramsey earned his undergraduate degree from Kansas State University and obtained his master’s and doctoral degrees from NC State. Ramsey also served in the Army Air Corps.

Ramsey taught and conducted research in the animal science department at NC State until his retirement in 1992.

He is survived by his wife, Jo; a sister, Carrol; a brother, Lynne; three children, Mary, Jim and Bo; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Lem Kelly, former head of the Army ROTC at NC State, died June 13. He was 92.

Kelly received his bachelor’s degree in applied mathematics from Henderson State Teachers College in Arkadelphia, Ark., in 1940. That same year, he was commissioned a 2nd Lt., Infantry in the U.S. Army, and later graduated from the Army’s Command and General Staff College in military science. Kelly served in the U.S. Army for 27 years and was a veteran of World War II from 1942-1945.

He served as an assistant professor of military science at Oklahoma State University and professor of military science at NC State. After attaining the rank of colonel in 1964, Kelly was appointed head of the Army ROTC at NC State until his retirement in 1967.

Kelly is survived by his wife Alene; a sister, Wanda; two children,, Michael and Patricia; two step-daughters, Susan and Cathy; and six grandchildren;.

Katherine Dusenberry Daniel, a former member of the library staff, died June 18. She was 93.

Born in Due West, S.C., Daniel received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and English from Erskine College in 1934. She earned her bachelor’s of science and master’s degrees in library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

As a professional college librarian, Daniel served on the library staffs at Clemson, Winthrop, Virginia Tech, NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill.

Daniel is survived by two brothers; George and Francis; two sisters, Sophie and Margaret; three children, David, Katherine and Sophie; and two grandchildren.

Elliott Lee Merritt, former university power plant superintendent for more than 30 years, died July 11. He was 94.

He is survived by his wife, Doris; three children, Samuel, Joel and Belinda; two step-daughters, Francis and Linda; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Clyde Harris Steedly, a former employee at the Student Health Center, died July 13. He was 67.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; four brothers, Moses, Charles, Robert and Franklin; three sisters, Rebecca, Sarah and Patricia; two children, Timothy and Lisa; and four grandchildren.
