Dr. Warwick Arden, College of Veterinary Medicine, has been elected U.S. dean-at-large to the board of directors of the Association of American Veterinary Colleges. The web site for the College of Humanities and Social Science’s new doctoral program – communication, rhetoric and digital media (CRDM) – has earned the Best of the Web award in the Department of School category from the Association of Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication, based on its content, functionality and aesthetics. Dr. Maurice G. Cook, soil science emeritus, is the 2006 recipient of the Hugh Hammond Bennett Award, the highest award given by the Soil and Water Conservation Society. The award is given for distinguished service in recognition of national and international accomplishments in the conservation of soil, water, and related natural resources. Dr. Eric Davis, plant pathology, has received the 2006 Ruth Allen Award for Innovative Research from the American Phytopathological Society. Dr. Ralph Dean, plant pathology, has been named a fellow of the American Phytopathological Society. Dr. Jan Genzer, chemical and biomolecular engineering, has received a Special Creativity Award from the Division of Materials Research at the National Science Foundation. The award extends the recipient’s research grant by two additional years to encourage further exploration in the research area. Barbara Metelsky, Institute for Nonprofits, will help represent North Carolina at the Nonprofit Congress in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 16-17. She is one of 265 nonprofit leaders from 48 states and the District of Columbia named as delegates. Dr. James Moyer, plant pathology, has been elected vice president of the American Phytopathological Society, and will serve as its president in 2008 and 2009. Dr. James M. Nau, professor of civil, construction, and environmental engineering, has received the 2006 George K. Wadlin Distinguished Service Award from the American Society for Engineering Education. The award recognizes distinguished service to the Civil Engineering Division of ASEE. Dr. Richard Spontak, chemical and biomolecular engineering, has received the 2006 Recognition Award from the International Network for Engineering Education and Research (iNEER) “for distinguished leadership and innovation in active engineering education and multidisciplinary design and research.”
