Welcome to North Carolina State University

Welcome to the website of the Fourth Annual Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Meeting of the Minds for undergraduate researchers/creative artists from the 12 ACC universities.  The NC State University Office of Undergraduate Research within the Division of Undergraduate Academic Programs will host this exciting event where top undergraduates will showcase their research and creative scholarship on April 2-4, 2009 at the Holiday Inn’s Brownstone Hotel & Conference Center near the NC State University Campus.  This website will provide detailed information and instructions for registering for the conference.  Once registration closes we will further provide information about the placement of presenters in specific oral or poster presentation sessions (the program/abstract book details).

At NC State we celebrate student scholarship within the discipline by providing special research grants, travel awards, a dynamic website http://www.ncsu.edu/undergrad-research/, faculty involvement in national programs that support undergraduate research http://www.reinventioncenter.miami.edu/MinutesOctober1207.htm, and a variety of symposia at which students may present their work during semesters or the summer.  Indeed, NC State founded and funded the State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium that featured its fourth year at Appalachian State University on November 22, 2008 http://www.sncurcs.org/.  Our faculty earned numerous grants that enabled over 250 students from campus and around the nation to conduct research during the summer 2008 http://www.ncsu.edu/undergrad-research/Studentsa/summer-research-programs.php.  So, hands-on learning and discovery are in our Wolfpack blood and we are pleased to recognize and showcase the top ACC students (6 per institution) who will attend this conference and represent their university.

The ACC: Excellence…Then, Now and Always

Since 1953, the Atlantic Coast Conference has been home to universities renowned not only for athletic prowess, but also for some of the nation’s finest academic achievements.  The 12 ACC universities embody a rich tradition of excellence in undergraduate scholarship.  First hosted in 2006 by Clemson University, this 2-day event showcases the results of undergraduate student research and creative projects.  It is a unique opportunity for students from a variety of disciplines and institutional backgrounds to come together as both exhibitors and audience with the goal of highlighting undergraduate scholarship from across the ACC.  Other hosting institutions for the Meeting of the Minds have been the University of Virginia (2007) and Florida State University (2008).  North Carolina State University is delighted to host this 4th annual event.

Special Thanks

This annual event would not be possible without the financial support, leadership and vision of Provost Emeritus, Dr. David Brown, Wake Forest University who coordinates the ACC Inter-Institutional Academic Collaborative.  We also appreciate the financial support from Dr. Larry Nielsen, Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor at NC State University and from Dr. Terri Lomax, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies.  The abstract publication was developed and assembled by Sharon Hunt and the website was developed by Evelyn Clegg who will also oversee the on-site registration.  We thank Barbara Bates of the Holiday Inn Brownstone Hotel & Conference Center, Wendy Dorman of the NCSU State Club, Morgan Greer of the NC Museum of Art, and the many undergraduate volunteers who will assist the hosting staff and campus visitors in so many ways.
