Description

All engineering disciplines are becoming more dependent upon newer materials or the more efficient utilization of existing materials. The Minor in Materials Science and Engineering is designed to provide students with the fundamentals necessary for employment in materials-related fields and/or advanced study in Materials Science and Engineering. This Minor should be attractive to students in all engineering disciplines, as well as students in chemistry, physics and textiles. The MSE Minor offers a structured program which provides recognition of the accomplishment for students wishing to obtain some level of expertise in the field. It also provides non-MSE majors planning to attend graduate school in Materials Science and Engineering a meaningful and useful way to prepare themselves.

Requirements

  • Completion of 11 hours of core MSE courses and 6 hours of MSE electives in one of four subdisciplines.
  • All Minor courses must be completed with an average GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Required Courses (11 hours)

MSE 200 Mechanical Properties of Structural Materials (3 cr) OR
MSE 201 Structure and Properties of Engineering Materials (3 cr)

MSE 210 Materials Characterization Laboratory (2 cr)
MSE 330 Crystal Chemistry and Phase Equilibria (3 cr)
MSE 321 Phase Transformations and Diffusion (3 cr)

Elective Courses (6 hours)

Pick one Sub-discipline:

Polymeric Materials
MSE 425 Introduction to Polymeric Materials (3 cr)
MSE 455 Polymer Technology and Engineering (3 cr)

Ceramic Materials
MSE 435 Physical Ceramics (3 cr)
MSE 445 Ceramics Processing (3 cr)

Metallic Materials
MSE 431 Physical Metallurgy I (3 cr)
MSE 440 Metals Processing (3 cr)

Microelectronic Materials
MSE 331 Electronic Properties of Materials (3 cr)
MSE 460 Microelectronic Materials (3 cr)

Admissions and Certification of Minor

Admissions
Visit the office of the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the MSB department to apply for the Minor and to prepare a plan of study. Admission to the Minor shall be governed by the same academic criteria used to transfer into the MSE curriculum. Students who have been denied admission to the MSE curriculum will also be denied admission to the MSE Minor.

Certification
Successful completion of the Minor will be verified by the Director of Undergraduate Programs in the MSE department, as listed below. Paperwork for certification can be obtained in the MSE Office for Undergraduate Programs and should be completed during the pre-registration period for the student's final semester at NC State.
