Description
The Music Minor is designed for qualified undergraduate students who
wish to engage in the study of music through one of four curricular emphases.
The 20-hour curriculum includes group of required courses in music theory, aural skills, class piano, and Western music history. A collection of required courses and music electives support the students' area of specialization in Performance, Composition, History or Liberal Arts. The Capstone, related to the students' specialization, represents a specific level of achievement for the graduating Music Minor.

Admissions
and Certification of Minor
Admissions
For all students:
- A student can apply electronically via http://www.ncsu.edu/music/minor.html or in person at PMS 204, Dr. Fuller's office, to be admitted as a Music Minor.
- The student is required to meet with Dr. Fuller to discuss a plan of study and the expectations established for the Music Minor.
- Dr. Fuller will arrange an opportunity for the student to meet their Emphasis Adviser and the Applied Instructor if necessary.
Performance Emphasis Audition Requirements:
- To be admitted into the Performance Emphasis, the student should electronically schedule a Performance Emphasis audition via http://www.ncsu.edu/music/minor.html. The audition must be passed before the student is admitted into the Performance Emphasis. If the student does not meet the criteria for the Performance Emphasis, the Program Administrator will advise him/her on other possibilities available in the Music Minor program.
Course of Study Requirements:
- The student is required to meet with Dr. Fuller at the end of each semester to have their plan of study signed. This should take place before the student meets with their academic adviser and enrolls for the following semester's courses.
- The student is required to meet with their adviser each semester to discuss course registration. this should take place before the student meets with their academic adviser and enrolls for the following semester's courses.
Capstone Requirements
- The capstone requirements must be approved by the student's adviser and Program administrator the semester before completing the Music Minor.
Performance Emphasis:
- A Performance Emphasis student must enroll in MUS 493: Recital the final semester in the minor.
- Performance Emphasis students must complete a pre-recital jury two to three weeks before their scheduled graduation recital.
Composition Emphasis
- The composition emphasis students must enroll in MUS 498: Independent Study and complete the MUS498 Independent Study approval form which documents the timeline and goals for the completion of this Capstone the final semester in the minor.
History and Liberal Arts Emphases:
- History and Liberal Arts Emphases students must meet with the course instructor of their final three credit elective course to discuss the requirements for their capstone project. this meeting should take place within the first week of the semester. A Capstone approval from must be completed and signed in triplicate within three weeks of the beginning of the course, and a copy retained by Dr. Fuller, the course instructor, and the student.
Certification
The Department of Music Director, Dr. Mark Scearce will certify the minor prior to graduation. The minor must be completed
no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate
from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification should be
completed no later than during the registration period for the student's
final semester at NC State.
