Description
The Music Minor is designed for qualified undergraduate students who
wish to engage in the serious study of music within a planned curriculum.
The 18-hour curriculum includes one music theory course and a two-semester
survey of music in Western civilization as core courses. The music minor
program is designed to foster creative though, aesthetic understanding,
and artistic self-expression.
Music Minor students choose from one of the three curricular emphases:
(1) Performance, (2) Theory/Composition, or (3) History/Literature. Each
emphasis has different course requirements.
Requirements
Performance and Theory/Composition Emphasis
- Completion of 18 credit hours.
- Students may pass out of Music 101/102 with a piano proficiency test.
- A grade of 'C' or better is required in each course used toward the
minor.
- Music minor courses may not be taken on a pass/fail basis.
- A maximum of 6 transfer credit hours may be applied to the music minor,
as approved by the advisor and Director of Music.
History/Literature Emphasis
- Completion of 18 credit hours.

Admissions
and Certification of Minor
Admissions
Students interested in the Music Minor Program should
begin by contacting the music office, 203 Price Music Center, 919.515.2981,
to arrange a conference with the appropriate faculty advisor. The student
and advisor should complete the application form at this time, develop
a plan of study, and arrange for an audition (performance emphasis).
For the History/Literature Emphasis and Theory/Composition Emphasis,
formal admission to the degree program will be granted following the
successful completion of Music 201. For the Performance Emphasis, an
audition is required for acceptance for private lessons (Mus 390), and
formal admission to the program is granted following the successful
completion of Music 201.
Certification
The Department of Music Director, Dr. Mark Scearce at 2620 Cates Ave,
will certify the minor prior to graduation. The minor must be completed
no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate
from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification should be
completed no later than during the registration period for the student's
final semester at NC State.
