Where No Two Wolfpack Alumni Are Alike

Each year, more than 6,400 new graduates join the Wolfpack family of alumni. Collectively, the 156,300 NC State alumni represent a diverse community of achievers located throughout the world. Catch up on what a few recent alumni are up to, then visit with members of the university's Forever Club – alums who have passed the 50-year anniversary of their graduation.

Recently, a trio of 1959 graduates – Tom Gilmore, Jim Hunt, and Bob Mattocks – discussed why they initially decided to attend to NC State, and how being a part of the NC State family for more than 50 years has impacted their lives.

Tom Gilmore

Tom Gilmore Tom Gilmore is permanent class president for NC State’s Class of 1959 and won the Alumni Association Outstanding Young Alumnus Award in 1972. A Greensboro native who majored in Horticulture while attending NC State, Gilmore is the owner of Gilmore Plant & Bulb in Julian, NC. In addition, he serves on the JC Raulston Arboretum Board of Advisors and is a former member of the CALS Alumni and Friends Advisory Board.

Jim Hunt

Jim Hunt Jim Hunt served an historic four terms as governor of North Carolina. The architect of the state's Smart Start early childhood program, Hunt has continued his work in education since leaving office in 2001. He served on the federal Commission on the Future of Higher Education assembled by Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings, and is chairman of the board and a founder of the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education, a California-based think tank. He also serves as board chairman of the James B. Hunt Jr. Institute for Educational Leadership and Policy.

Bob Mattocks

Bob Mattocks Bob Mattocks is the chairman of Jenkins The Energy Company of Pollocksville. A New Bern, N.C., native, he is Past President of the National Propane Gas Association and a former member of the NC State University Board of Visitors, the Education Foundation and the Student Aid Association. Mattocks graduated with a B.S. in Forest Management in 1959.
