Symantec Endpoint Protection 11 in Microsoft Windows:
To perform an virus scan using Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP), follow these steps:
- Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
- Open Symantec Endpoint Protection in the Start Menu. To find it, open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs. Locate and click on the folder titled "Symantec Endpoint Protection," then click on "Symantec Endpoint Protection."
- When the Symantec Endpoint Protection window opens, look at the list on the left side. Click on Scan for threats.
- Click on the Full Scan button.

- A new window will appear, and the scan process will begin. Depending on the number of files being scanned, the antivirus scan can take some time to complete. It is best not to interrupt this process, so leave your computer alone while it performs the scan.
- If any viruses are found during the scan process, you will be prompted, and can take action as necessary.

- When the virus scan is finished, the Scan Computer window will say "Completed." Close this window to return to the Symantec Endpoint Protection console.
- Make sure that your Quarantine list is empty. To view the Quarantine list, click on the View quarantine button.
- If there are any items present in the Quarantine list, select them and press the Delete button below the list. This will delete the infected file(s) from your computer.
- When you are finished, close Symantec Endpoint Protection and reboot your computer.
Symantec AntiVirus 9 or 10 in Microsoft Windows:
To perform an virus scan using Symantec AntiVirus 9 or 10 (SAV9, SAV10), follow these steps:
- Reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
- Open Symantec AntiVirus in the Start Menu. To find it, open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs. Locate and click on the folder titled "Symantec Client Security," then click on "Symantec AntiVirus."
- When the Symantec AntiVirus window opens, look at the list on the left side. SAV10 users should click on "Custom Scan." SAV9 users should click on either "Scan Computer" or "Scan a Floppy Disk."
- You will see a list of drives on your computer that you can scan for viruses. Place a check in the boxes next to the drive(s) that you wish to scan, then click the Scan button.

- A new window will appear, and the scan process will begin. Depending on the number of files being scanned, the antivirus scan can take some time to complete. It is best not to interrupt this process, so leave your computer alone while it performs the scan.
- If any viruses are found during the scan process, you will be prompted, and can take action as necessary.

- When the virus scan is finished, the Scan Computer window will say "Completed." Close this window to return to the Symantec AntiVirus console.
- Make sure that your Quarantine list is empty. To view the Quarantine list, open the View menu, and select Quarantine.
- If there are any items present in the Quarantine list, select them and press the red "X" button above the list. This will delete the infected file(s) from your computer.
- When you are finished, close Symantec AntiVirus and reboot your computer.
Symantec AntiVirus in Mac OS X:
To perform an virus scan in Mac OS X, follow these steps:
- Close all open programs on your computer.
- Open your Applications folder, located in the Macintosh HD. In the Applications folder, locate and double-click on "Symantec AntiVirus" icon.

- When the Symantec AntiVirus window opens, click on the Scan button.

- You will see a list of locations on your computer (called "targets") that you can scan for viruses. Select the location that you wish to scan, then click the Select button.

- A new window will appear, and the scan process will begin. Depending on the number of files being scanned, the antivirus scan can take some time to complete. It is best not to interrupt this process, so leave your computer alone while it performs the scan.
- If any viruses are found during the scan process, you will be prompted, and can take action as necessary.
- When the virus scan is finished, the Virus Scan window will say "Scan Completed." Close this window to return to the Symantec AntiVirus console.
- When you are finished, close Symantec AntiVirus.
