The NC State Dance Program will present its annual Fall Concert on November 10 and 11, 2011, at 8pm in Stewart Theatre on the NC State campus. As part of the Dance Program’s celebration of its 25th anniversary year, the Fall Concert will present Anatomy of an Argument by NC State alum Mair Culbreth (class of 1999), performed by the NCSU Dance Company, and excerpts from Testimonial by alum Gerren Mobley (class of 2003), performed by the Panoramic Dance Project. Additionally, the NCSU Dance Company will perform Julep by Dance Program assistant director Autumn Mist Belk. The concert will feature choreographic work by independent study students Miranda Cazin, Sarah Griner, Cassia Lewis, and Ashley Walls. Class choreographic projects from both of the Dance Program’s student companies, the NCSU Dance Company, a modern dance company artistically directed by program director Robin Harris, and the Panoramic Dance Project, dedicated to Afrocentric and other culturally-driven dance forms, directed by Autumn Mist Belk, will also be represented on the concert.

The NCSU Dance Company will present Short Lectures and Demonstrations: A Collection of Dances Inspired by the Choreographers’ Majors. The collection includes: The Use of Classical and Operant Conditioning in Training Aldabra Tortoises (Geochelone gigantea) by Kelly Bryant; Pathological Alterations in Food Intake by Jacquelyn Watson; Raising a Well-Respected Canine Citizen by Mary Jackson; How To Make a Tutu by Cassia Lewis; Survival Techniques by Kaitlin Smith; Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study by Megan Imhoff; Spandex Specifications by Monica Matthai and Agee Taylor; Abstract Algebra: Introduction to Groups by Jennifer Gamble; and Window Dressing for Success by Sarah Griner.

The Panoramic Dance Project students will present three group studies collectively titled Location by Chance. The three sections (Union Square, Rivulets, and Psycho Tree Hugger Needs a Nap) were developed by the students using elements of chance during the choreographic process. Each student created movements inspired by a location important in their life, then the movements were linked together and manipulated in various ways determined by rolls of dice, choosing playing cards, or other students determining pathways across the stage without knowing who would dance in that path.

The Dance Program is proud to present the work of its first recipient of the NC State Creative Artist Award, Ashley Walls. Walls’ As One Should Always is a duet about the deterioration of a relationship performed by Kelly Bryant, recipient of the 2010-2011 Performing Arts Award, and Hayley Dirscherl. Walls will present another new work, a solo that challenges conventions of performance, titled Meaning Crunch Me. Walls’ pieces along with other independent study students’ work explore dimensions of humanity. Miranda Cazin’s I am Generations of Sister, Daughter, and Mothers, set to Blue Blanket by Andrea Gibson, comments on the cycle of abuse. Sarah Griner’s duet, …to remain silent, presents an interrogation in which information is revealed from what is not said. TechnoLOGIC by Cassia Lewis is a fun and upbeat look at our culture’s obsession with technology, supported by music by Daft Punk.

A reception will follow Thursday night’s performance.
