Academic Support Program for Student Athletes
Annual Report
2002-2003 Academic Year
Mission
The mission of undergraduate education at NC State is to provide an
environment in which students can acquire the knowledge, skills and attributes
necessary to become responsible and productive citizens of the world. The
Academic Support Program for Student Athletes (ASPSA) will contribute to the
achievement of this mission by providing academic support and guidance to
student athletes as they balance the rigorous commitments they face
representing the University in their academic and athletic endeavors.
Short-term goals
To secure permanent funding for the Tutorial Coordinator position within the
ASPSA. This position is critical to the overall success of our program. For over a year conversations have taken place regarding this position. By July 1, 2003, as we enter the next fiscal year, it is crucial to have hard, permanent money attached to this position.
Facilities continue to be a short-term and long-term goal for the ASPSA. The
ASPSA had been forced to leave the study center area of the Stroud Center and will setting up temporary quarters in the Weisiger-Brown building. During the domino effect period of the building and renovation plans for the Department of Athletics, the ASPSA will be asked to continue to provide their quality services in less than adequate settings. The building plan will take until Spring 2005 for the ASPSA to move into the top two floors of the Case Athletic Center.
Long-term goals
The ASPSA continues to strive to become the national benchmark program for
providing academic support services for student athletes. The ASPSA also
continues to achieve a student athlete graduation rate commensurate to the
student body graduation rate.
