Champions in the Community
Fall 2008 Middle School Leadership Conference
On October 8, 2008 NC State University hosted 76 students from 12 Wake County middle schools. The students received NC State backpacks and customized activity planners. NC State student-athletes facilitated sessions using character traits selected by the Wake County school system. In teams of 20, the middle school students attended hands-on activity sessions on Integrity, Courage, Kindness, and Good Judgment. The students enjoyed lunch with their peers while receiving an inspiring message from Mr. Oronde Ash, former NC State soccer player and assistant coach. Student-athlete volunteers included Jana Angel (Volleyball), Marilynn Angell (Track & Field), Ronnie Bouemboue (Soccer), Alison Davis (Volleyball), Keri Demar (Volleyball), Krystal Hawkins (Softball), Sommer Ivory (Volleyball), Bona Jones (Cross Country), Lisa Kretchman (Volleyball), Steve Mellor (Swimming), Brian O’Boyle (former Wrestler), Allison Presnell (Softball), Emily Pritt (Cross Country), Alex Smith (Volleyball), Brenda Stanton (Track), Brittany Strachan (Basketball), Jess Ward (Swimming) and Colleen Wetherbee (Cross Country). ASPSA is grateful to its partners, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Hugh Shelton Leadership Center, Pre-College Programs, Coca Cola, and General Mills for their support and community leadership. A special thanks to Regina Garrett (ASPSA intern) and Ashley Young (Pre-College Programs graduate assistant) for going above expectations to make this conference a success.
