Advising

The advisors within the Academic Support Program for Student Athletes take great pride in offering the student athletes at NC State the best support that is available to any student in the country. Our nationally recognized staff endeavors to provide student s innovative and attentive advising while instilling a love of learning and attitude of self confidence. Although there are numerous components of advising, we concentrate much of our efforts in the following areas:

Academic Advisors for First Year College Student-Athletes

As the academic advisor of record for students in FYC, we assist students in the registration process for their upcoming semester. We also provide information to students about intracampus transfer requirements as they explore different majors and move to ward matriculation. We provide information to students about North Carolina State University's academic policies and procedures. Lastly, we provide information to students about the NCAA rules and regulations impacting their eligibility.

Act as supplemental advisors for student-athletes in a major

In this role, we pre-advise students during the registration process to be sure they are prepared to meet with their major advisor and are aware of their practice and travel schedules. Upon the approval of their initial class schedule by the student's major advisor, re review the schedules for practice conflicts and to be sure that missed class time due to travel is minimized. We also provide information to students about the NCAA rules and regulations impacting their eligibility.

College Liaisons

A memberof the ASPSA is assigned to each college in an attempt to improve communication between the colleges and the program. With this effort, ASPSA staff members attend departmental meetings to gather information to share with the staff about curriculum changes and intracampus transfer policy changes or updates. During the registration advising period, the ASPSA liaisons contact the specific departments for guidelines to pass along to the student-athletes with regard to early advising appointments. Liaisons provide a consistent point of contact for each college if they have any issues or concerns they would like to express.

Priority Registration/Hot list

Academic Coordinators meet with their teams prior to the registration advising period to provide information about priority registration and the registration process within each college. Each semester, ASPSA monitors the "hot list" to be sure that there are no more than 25% student-athletes in any section of any class. In the event that the percentage is over 25%, a member of ASPSA staff makes contact with the appropriate department to discuss the situation. In addition to reviewing the numbers of student-athletes, the staff looks at the different personalities of the students enrolled in each section to be proactive in avoiding any potential situations that may arise.

Reconnect Program

ASPSA attempts to inform former student-athletes who have not completed degree requirements of the different options to get back into the university and make progress toward their degree. In addition, ASPSA helps to connect the student with the appropriate advisor in a degree program. A member of the ASPSA staff is responsible for working with students who leave the university prior to graduation and then return to the university in order to continue to make progress toward their degree.
