Fall 2009 Tutor Training Workshops

A Day in the Life of a Student-Athlete

Presenter: Heather Murphy, Assistant Director/Eligibility Coordinator and Megan Albidrez, Associate Director ASPSA
Date: Monday, August 31 5-6 pm and Monday, October 5 2-3pm
CRLA Level: 1

Description: The purpose of this workshop is for you to gain a better understanding of the student-athlete population. We will discuss some of the eligibility requirements that student-athletes are held too and walk you through the day of a student-athlete. The goal is to create awareness of the obligations that student-athletes have in addition to the academic demands in hopes that they may have more of an understanding of some reasons behind tiredness, lack of focus, and other student rationale given that may some times hinder tutoring sessions.

Distance Education/WebAssign Course Assistance

Presenter: Dr. John Griggs, Coordinator of Classroom Instruction/Instructor for NCSU Department of Mathematics

Description: Several students are enrolled in Distance Education courses or courses that involve WebAssign work. It may sometimes prove to be a challenge assisting students in these courses. The purpose of this workshop is to provide guidelines for tutor assistance on WebAssign work and to discuss strategies for improving sessions with students in Distance Ed or WebAssign courses.

Organization and Study Skills

Presenter: Christi Turner, ASEP Coordinator

Description: Study and organizational skills are essential as students move toward independent learning. Individuals with strong study and organization skills are able to break down information more easily and use time more efficiently. In this workshop, we will discuss study skills and organization techniques that can be used to help students become independent learners.

Working with Students of the Opposite Sex: Comfort Levels and Setting Boundaries

Presenter: Amy Circosta, Asst Vice-Provost/Director of Harassment & Discrimination Prevention

Description: The purpose of this workshop is to discuss sexual harassment, including definition from the law, circumstances that constitute sexual harassment and the procedure for handling these harassment situations.

Tutoring Students Who Use Vista, Moodle, Blackboard and Maple

Presenters: Dan Parsons and Ashley Walls (ASEP staff)
Date: Friday, September 25 10-11am
CRLA Level: 2

Description: If you want to learn more about these programs and have the desire to maximize a student’s success in courses that use them, then this is the training for you. They will discuss course content, discussions, assessments, grades and other items associated with Vista. Understanding how Moodle and Blackboard works and how tutors can help their students find and prepare for each assignment will be addressed and demonstrated. The purpose of Maple will be explained and how to navigate through the program will be demonstrated. Basic grammar and commands will be discussed as well as utilizing the help system.

 

Content Area Roundtables

Presenters: Ray Herchenroder, Elizabeth Chivers and Kira Smith (ASEP staff)

Description: Content area roundtables are designed for tutors of the same discipline area to come together and discuss common concerns and best practices. Please bring any questions for your peers in regards to how they cover specific materials and be prepared to tell others what works best for you.

 

Communication Skills

Presenter: Keeley Pollard, Academic Skills Enhancement Program staff member

Date: Wednesday, September 30 10-11am

Description: Do you work with students who are not quite vocal? Would you like to know how you could read your students? In this training, you will learn how to pick up all types of communication cues and learn how to pull information you need from them to help them in sessions.

 

Orientation Refresher

Presenter: Academic Skills Enhancement Program administrators

Description: The purpose of this workshop is to review some key ASPSA/NCAA policies and procedures, address any common concerns, and to update you on any recent policy changes.

 

 

Assessing and Changing Study Behaviors

Presenter: Amber Rae Childers, ASEP Administrator

Date: Monday, October 12 at 5:15pm, Monday, November 9 5:30-6:30pm

Description: The purpose of this workshop is to learn how to assess study behaviors and then incorporate strategies to teach students how to change their own study habits. This is a new topic in CRLA Level 2.

 

 

Alternative Tutoring Methods

Presenter: Elizabeth Chivers, NCSU Instructor/ Academic Skills Enhancement Program staff

Date: Thursday, October 15 5-6pm, Friday, November 6 1-2pm

Description: Does your student seem disinterested in the material being covered? Can’t seem to get your student excited about the learning process? In this workshop, we discuss some of the creative tutoring activities that you and your peers have used to change the atmosphere of the tutoring session. Bring the games, tools, ideas, strategies that you have used to get your students jumpstarted and get ready to share in this open discussion!

 

Best Practices for Team Study Hall

Presenters: Tory Casas and Lolly Hemphill

Description: The purpose of this workshop is to review best practices for team study hall, and evaluate the reasoning behind these ideas. Special focus will be placed upon how to best prepare for study hall sessions, and dealing with difficult scenarios.

 

 

Reading and Writing Learning Disabilities

Presenter: Mark Newmiller, Assistant Director Disability Student Office

Date: Tuesday, November 3, 2009, 10-11am

CRLA Level: 3

Description: How do you identify a student with a learning disorder? How do you approach a tutoring session with a student that has disclosed that he/she has a learning disability? What is the difference between a learning disorder and a learning difference? In this workshop, we will answer these questions and discuss effective strategies for working with students with reading and writing learning disabilities.

 

 

Don’t Take My Words: Retaining Student Ownership of Papers

Presenter: Buddy Shay, Instructor/Coordinator, ILC Writing Center, North Campus

Description: "Don't Take My Words: Retaining Student Ownership of papers" is a presentation designed to help tutors learn strategies and techniques they can use to help students improve their writing without the tutors taking ownership of the papers.
