Academic
Support Program for Student Athletes
What
have we learned about our program through engaging in the assessment
process?
- Our
program provides excellent academic advising, particularly for
freshmen.
- Our
students need more education on diversity issues, especially those
related to sexual orientation.
- We
do an excellent job of moving student athletes from undecided
to a major by their fifth semester.
- Our
academic integrity program significantly impacts our new students’
knowledge about cheating in the university and increases the knowledge
of our tutors who are in close contact with our student athletes.
What
have we improved in our program through engaging in the assessment
process?
- We
improved our program through “Project Evaluation”
during which the staff discussed every phase of activity, including
those assessed over the last two years.
- We
also improved our program by hiring a Learning Specialist and
four graduate assistants to enhance our services to at risk student
athletes.
- We
increased the orientation and ongoing training available to our
tutors.
- We
continued to increase our knowledge of NCAA guidelines.
What
policy changes have we made as a result of engaging in the assessment
process?
- All
tutors must complete the training workshop before starting to
tutor and must sign the appropriate documents related to compliance.
- All
Fall 2003 MDS 101C classes will focus on academic matters instead
of including other non-academic subjects.
