Biomathematics Seminar Tuesday 4/7/08 Speaker: Stefan Seelecke, Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, NCSU Title: Smart Materials in Biomedical Applications Abstract: The talk will give an overview of active materials (shape memory alloys, shape memory polymers, piezoceramic materials), which increasingly find their way into biomedical applications. A brief approach to modeling based on unifying free energy concepts is followed by a number of exemplary applications, which explain the advantages of the materials and illustrate these by finite element simulations. The examples cover: a) a shape memory-based novel smart inhaler system for targeted drug delivery, b) biomedical stents/stent grafts for the repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA).
