Joyner's Work Highlighted in Cary's Town Hall Gallery
Works of art by Charles Joyner, professor of art and design,are on display through March 24 in Cary's Town Hall Gallery. The exhibition is titled "Patterns of Commonality." Joyner's work is a creation of mixed media that explores cross-cultural issues, ancestry, rituals, religion and spirituality.
Lewis Joins NOMA Conference Advisory Board
Professor of Industrial Design Glenn Lewis has accepted a seat on the 2008 National Organization of Minority Architects Conference Advisory Board. The conference will be held in Washington, D.C. this year.
Barrie Presents Paper in Korea
In December, Tom Barrie, professor of architecture, presented a paper at the Urban Regeneration of Local Governments in Chungcheong Region (Korea) Symposium, titled "Is the North American Mid-Sized City a Model for Regenerative Urbanism?"
In November, he presented a paper at the 2007 International Association for Environmental Philosophy annual meeting in Chicago titled "The Path as a Mediator - Spatial Sequences and Symbolism of Korean Soen (Zen) Buddhist Monasteries, with a Case Study of Tongdo-sa."
Brandeis Serves as Visiting Artist in Virginia
Susan Brandeis, professor of art and design, was a visiting artist at Virginia Commonwealth University in January. She gave a talk about her work and met with students over her two-day stay.
Harmon Project in Architectural Record
A modern house designed by Professor in Practice Frank Harmon, FAIA, is featured in the January 2008 edition of Architectural Record. The title of the article is "Frank Harmon raised the Strickland-Ferris Residence off the ground, then let its roof take flight.
Three Adjunct Faculty Receive AIA Design Awards
The American Institute of Architects North Carolina chapter's design awards signaled a trifecta win for the School of Architecture faculty. First place went to Frank Harmon, second place to Jeffrey Lee, and third place went to Kenneth Hobgood.
Dunn Leads $3 Million Climate Change Study
An NC State zoologist is the lead researcher on a five-year, $3 million study that will turn up the heat on a number of ant species to learn more about the effects of climate change. The study, says Dr. Rob Dunn, assistant professor of zoology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, will specifically examine how climate change affects the movement and distribution of ants and other invertebrate species.
That's important, Dunn says, because, like a pebble that creates ripples in a pond, changes in insect distribution can have major effects on any number of aspects of ecosystems, including seed dispersal, pest control, where unwanted invasive insects may turn up next or where conservation efforts should be attempted - or abandoned. Azmy Named Head of Nuclear Engineering
Dr. Yousry Y. Azmy has been named head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering at NC State, effective June 1. He replaces Dr. Mohamed Bourham, who has served as interim department head since July 1, 2006.
Azmy comes to NC State from The Pennsylvania State University where he has served as professor of nuclear engineering since July 2002. Prior to that he held several positions in the Computational Physics and Engineering Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from 1986 through 2002.
A fellow of the American Nuclear Society, Azmy earned his Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in nuclear engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, in 1985 and 1983, respectively. He received a B.Sc. in nuclear engineering from the University of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1978.
