April 20 – While federal law prevents hospitals from revealing information on a patient, the gowns those patients wear might provide more details than they'd like. The News & Observer of Raleigh reports that a North Carolina State University design team is working on a plan to end the issue of partial disclosure once and for all. N.C. State textile design professor Traci Lamar has the financial backing and serious research to develop a restyled garment that could finally be practical for hospitals across the country and less embarrassing for the person having to wear it...
Political stakes high as U.S. Congress returns
The US Daily, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Tualatin Times, Phoenix Business Journal, Philadelphia Business Journal,Reuters Top News, Milwaukee Business Journal, Portland Tribune, Sherwood Gazette, Beaverton Valley Times
April 19 – Barack Obama's presidency has been a wild ride for the U.S. Congress and lawmakers are bracing for more turbulence when they begin returning on Monday to tackle an array of tough issues from healthcare to energy...."Now the agenda gets more ambitious, and by definition more contentious," said Andrew Taylor, chairman of the political science department at North Carolina State University, noting Democrats may have trouble within their own ranks over some of the most ambitious spending proposals. "The whole notion of deficits is going to make some Democrats uneasy," Taylor said....
Labor unions will have eyes on new FedEx hub
Washington Business Journal, Minneapolis St. Paul Business Journal, Missourian, Boston Business Journal, South Florida Business Journal, Pittsburgh Business Times, Cincinnati Business Journal
April 20 – Union organizers have their eye on the soon-to-open FedEx Express Mid-Atlantic hub, but the odds they could successfully penetrate the facility in the least-unionized state in the country could depend on legislation now pending in Congress....But FedEx could actually benefit from organized labor if it means more reliable workers, said Jeff Leiter, a professor of sociology at N.C. State University who studies union issues. "They have a product that's perishable -- they've got to move those packages quickly," Leiter said. "So they really do need a dependable and cooperative labor force. If an organized labor force could be developed in that kind of dependable way, it could be useful for them."
NC State Study Shows How To Deflect Asteroids and Save The Earth
Carolina Newswire, The Vancouver Sun, SpaceDaily, Wtop.com
April 18 –You may want to thank David French in advance. Because, in the event that a comet or asteroid comes hurtling toward Earth, he may be the guy responsible for saving the entire planet. French, a doctoral candidate in aerospace engineering at North Carolina State University, has determined a way to effectively divert asteroids and other threatening objects from impacting Earth by attaching a long tether and ballast to the incoming object. By attaching the ballast, French explains, "you change the object's center of mass, effectively changing the object’s orbit and allowing it to pass by the Earth, rather than impacting it."...
Freelon's winning streak extends with D.C. project
The News & Observer
April 19 – Local architect Philip Freelon has just scored a plum project in Washington, a city whose bricks and mortar tell the history of a country. But this man, who has helped define and redefine many an urban landscape, traces his inspiration to a quiet moment many years ago in the woods with his grandfather. Freelon, the leader of a team of architects chosen to design the Smithsonian's Museum of African American History and Culture on the National Mall, vividly recalls his trek along the wooded banks of Wissahickon Creek in northwest Philadelphia...."Phil has really built that practice from scratch," said Marvin Malecha, president of the American Institute of Architects and dean of the N.C. State University College of design. "He's had partners along the way, but he's always had a greater vision of what he can be."
