NC State’s Links to Cancer Research
The V Foundation and NC State are inextricably linked in the fight against cancer. This year, the foundation has added a cancer research symposium to a week of special events in the Triangle, which concludes with the Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic at NC State’s new Lonnie Poole Golf Course.
On Saturday Aug. 15, scientists and doctors who have received V Foundation funding will speak about developments in cancer research. Dr. John Cavanagh, director of the Jimmy V-NC State Cancer Therapeutics Training Program, will be a panelist with doctors from Duke and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The free, public symposium from 10 a.m. to noon in the Raleigh Convention Center.
The golf classic, which is open to the public on Sunday, Aug. 16, features celebrities like NBA star Charles Barkley, 16-year-old prodigy Dakoda Dowd, recording artist Meat Loaf and ESPN SportsCenter host Stuart Scott. Admission is $5, and the gates open at 8:30 a.m. with a 9:30 shotgun start.
Academic Coaches Training
Each fall, faculty, staff and graduate assistants volunteer as academic coaches to help students make a successful transition to the university. NC State’s Pack Promise scholars program will offer training for volunteers on Monday, Aug. 17.
Academic coaches encourage and support students by helping them find the information and resources they need. They encourage them to get involved in activities that will support their studies and help them connect on campus.
Interested? Contact Erin Robinson in the Office of Advising Support, Information and Services at 513-0292 or erin_robinson@ncsu.edu. Please RSVP for training so that enough printed materials will be available. The Aug. 17 session is from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Faculty Senate chambers, located in D.H. Hill Library.
DELTA Fall Registration
Faculty, staff and graduate students can now register for free fall workshops and seminars through Distance Education and Learning Technology Applications (DELTA). Get the scoop on Moodle, the new learning management system, or take part in a distance education orientation. Fall classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 8, and sessions are offered through Dec. 8. To sign up, go to http://delta.ncsu.edu/workshops and click "Register now.”
Greenhouse Gas Inventory
The Sustainability Office will discuss results of NC State’s first Greenhouse Gas Inventory on Sept. 2 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the south gallery of Talley Student Center. The inventory provides baseline information about emissions for the main, Centennial and Centennial Biomedical campuses, as well as some satellite offices.
Among peer institutions, the inventory found that NC State’s emissions were comparable with some environmentally conscious East Coast schools and are in line with current trends, said Jeff Hightower, director of utilities infrastructure. Hightower will discuss the inventory process during a podcast interview to be released Sept. 4 via NC State’s iTunesU site.
The inventory can be used in developing a climate action plan. As part of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, NC State will update the inventory annually and host information sessions to engage the campus community. The Industrial Extension Service and Office of Sustainability are partnering to present a Web seminar Sept. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. More information on all these programs can be found at http://www.ncsu.edu/sustainability/climate_impact.php.
Campus Farmers Market
NC State’s Campus Farmers Market will return to the Brickyard on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Shoppers will find seasonal produce, organic body products, eggs, meat, seafood and other items. The weekly market will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays through Nov. 18 in front of the library breezeway.
Parking Updates
Faculty and staff who have been parking in resident student areas (RW/Resident West and RE/Resident East) over the summer are asked not to do so. The resident student parking spaces are needed for early move-in operations. More move-in information is posted at http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/trans/tempNews/moveIn/index.html.
Fall semester parking enforcement begins at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Motorcycle riding employees who do not participate in payroll deduction for permits also need to come to the Transportation Office to purchase a $60 permit for the upcoming academic year. Questions? Contact David Gregory, parking services manager, at david_gregory@ncsu.edu.
