Evolution of the Conflict in Iraq

Hear a military expert’s perspective on how the conflict in Iraq evolved from 2003 to 2009. On Monday, Sept. 21, Brig. Gen. H.R. McMaster, director of concept development and experimentation at the Army Capabilities Integration Center in Fort Monroe, Va., will speak from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in Stewart Theatre.

From 2005 to 2006, McMaster commanded the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment during its deployment to Iraq. His counterinsurgency strategy to retake the Iraqi city of Tal Afar served as a model for future Army operations. After a stint at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, he was assigned to develop innovative strategies and tactics for the Army Capabilities Integration Center. He commanded Eagle Troop, Second Squadron, of the Second Armored Cavalry Regiment during Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in Iraq from 1990 to 1991. In 1992, he began graduate studies in military history. He is the author of the 1998 book Dereliction of Duty: Johnson, McNamara, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the Lies That Led to Vietnam.

His talk is sponsored by NC State’s School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the Triangle Institute for Security Studies.

DELTA Fall Registration

International Affairs Seminar Series

Two speakers will open a seminar series, Globalization Strategies and International Services, on Friday, Aug. 28, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Walnut Room of Talley Student Center. Dr. Bailian Li, vice provost for international affairs, will discuss university globalization strategies, and Leslie Allen, international program coordinator, will speak on international communication and program planning.

Monthly seminars will highlight international programs and services for students, staff, faculty and the communities they serve. The presentations include time for participant questions.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory

The Sustainability Office will discuss the results of NC State’s first Greenhouse Gas Inventory on Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the south gallery of the Talley Student Center. The inventory provides baseline information about emissions for the main, Centennial and Centennial Biomedical campuses, as well as some satellite offices.

Among peer institutions, the inventory found that NC State’s emissions were comparable with some environmentally conscious East Coast schools and are in line with current trends, said Jeff Hightower, director of utilities infrastructure. Hightower will discuss the inventory process during a podcast interview to be released Friday, Sept. 4, via NC State’s iTunesU site.

The inventory can be used in developing a climate action plan. As part of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment, NC State will update the inventory annually and host information sessions to engage the campus community. The Industrial Extension Service and Office of Sustainability are partnering to present a Web seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 16, from 2 to 3 p.m. More information on all these programs can be found at  http://www.ncsu.edu/sustainability/climate_impact.php.

Campus Farmers Market

NC State’s Campus Farmers Market will return to the Brickyard on Wednesday, Sept. 2. Shoppers will find seasonal produce, organic products, eggs, meat, seafood and other items. The weekly market will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Wednesday through Nov. 18.

Online ticket discounts are available for the 2009 State Fair.

Discounts on State Fair Tickets

The State Fair is offering free admission tickets as part of an early bird special. Those who spend $40 or more on tickets at http://www.ncstatefair.org before Sept. 30 qualify for the offer.

Discounts on advance admission and ride tickets are also available for online ticket purchases. Buying in advance will save $2 per adult admission ticket and $8 per ride sheet. Advance admission tickets will cost $5 for adults and $1 for children ages 6-12. Adult admission tickets for groups of 40 or more will cost $4.75 per ticket. An 18-ticket ride sheet will cost $10 in advance. Tickets for concerts in Dorton Arena are also available online.

The fair will run from Thursday, Oct. 15, to Saturday, Oct. 24.

Wachovia Executive Lecture Series

Students, faculty, staff and business leaders interested in hearing insights from corporate executives can attend an event featuring Susan Ivey, president of Reynolds American, from 4:30 to 5:30 on Wednesday, Sept. 23, in 3400 Nelson Hall. The event is part of the Wachovia Executive Lecture Series, developed for students in the College of Management, the greater university community and members of the business community. Admission is free and no registration is required. Parking is available in the Dan Allen Parking Deck.

Wolfline Updates

Founders Drive has reopened following construction project closures. Wolfline's Route 6 (Carter-Finley) serves Scott Hall, and Route 8 (Southeast Loop) serves the D.H. Hill Library and other stops on Founders Drive.

Regular Wolfline service began Wednesday, Aug. 19, with faculty/staff service via Route 6 (Carter-Finley), Route. 8 (Southeast Loop) and Route 7 (Wolflink Shuttle). For schedules and updates, visit http://www.ncsu.edu/wolfline.

Hillsborough Street Roundabout Project

Construction work on Hillsborough Street has required Watauga Club Drive beside Primrose Hall to be closed. Traffic delays on Hillsborough Street are expected beginning at Oberlin Road and heading west due to construction.

The new Pullen Road extension is expected to be completed this week. When it is finished, Oberlin Road traffic between the Pullen Road extension and Hillsborough Street will be diverted to the new route so underground utilities can be installed on Oberlin.

The following projects are under way this week:

• Electrical utility work by Progress Energy at Horne and Gardner
• Sewer line installation on the south side of Hillsborough starting at Logan and heading west toward Chamberlain and Horne
• Utility duct bank installation on the south side of Hillsborough starting at Enterprise and heading west toward Logan and Chamberlain
• Water line installation on the south side of Hillsborough starting at Enterprise and heading west toward Logan and Chamberlain
• Brick paver installation around the Belltower on the south side of Hillsborough starting at Pullen and heading west toward Enterprise and Logan
• Light pole base installation around the Belltower near the Hillsborough/Pullen intersection
• Site grading and preparation

During the evening, crews will be installing sewer lines and service crossing from the south side of Hillsborough to businesses.

Motorcycle/Car Permits

Employees who drive both a car and a motorcycle and participate in monthly payroll deduction for permits need to come to the Transportation Office at 2721 Sullivan Drive to purchase a 2009-10 motorcycle permit for $5.

Computer Security Day

Cybersecurity is a concern for computer users, and the Office of Information Technology (OIT) wants you to build a strong defense against security threats. Faculty, staff and students are invited to OIT’s third annual Computer Security Day: Cybersecurity Self-Defense from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 26, in the Talley Student Center. The event provides insight into the privacy and security issues surrounding electronically stored sensitive information and offers ways to keep your computer and data safe.

An internationally celebrated event, Computer Security Day is designed to raise awareness and promote best practices in information technology security. During this event, there will be general and technical discussions about social networking, current privacy issues in legislation, Web application security, antivirus protection, disk encryption, mobile device security, tools for desktop security, identity theft prevention, identity management, access control and more.
