Atkins Named Distinguished Professor
Dr. Clarke Atkins, professor of medicine and cardiology in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has been named the recipient of the Jane Lewis Seaks Distinguished Professorship for Companion Animal Medicine.
The distinguished professorship is endowed by Terry G. Seaks, a member of the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Foundation Board of Directors, to honor his wife of 38 years and recognize the care their family pets have received at the CVM Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The $1 million endowed professorship is made possible with the Seaks’ donation of appreciated securities, matching funds from the R.B. Terry Charitable Foundation and the Distinguished Professor Endowment Trust Fund through the University of North Carolina General Administration.
Atkins, who joined NC State in 1989, is known for his research and teaching in small animal cardiology, having authored more than 150 publications, a multimedia interactive computer program in canine cardiology and numerous textbook chapters. Board certified in veterinary internal medicine and cardiology, he has spoken extensively in the United States and abroad.
Equal Opportunity Institute Accepting Applications
Monday, Sept. 14, is the online application deadline for the Equal Opportunity Institute, a free certificate program open to faculty, staff, students and the public. Sponsored by the Office for Equal Opportunity, the institute is designed to help participants develop a comprehensive understanding of equal opportunity issues. Topics include diversity, affirmative action, university policies and procedures, and discrimination and harassment.
The annual program takes place from September through May. Participants begin with an orientation session to design an individual educational plan.

Chappell Joins CVM
Dr. Kim Chappell has joined the College of Veterinary Medicine as a clinical assistant professor with the Center for Comparative Medicine and Translational Research.
Chappell will oversee the Clinical Studies Core, which provides support for veterinary research trials. After earning B.S. and DVM degrees from NC State, she spent nine years in clinical development with the veterinary pharmaceutical industry, where she led large, multisite companion animal effectiveness studies. She has experience with study design and protocol development, planning, budgeting, contracting, investigator recruitment, study initiation, study personnel training, data analysis and reporting, and Food and Drug Administration relations.
Nominees Sought for Service to Environment and Society Award
Nominations are being sought for the annual College of Natural Resources and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Joint Award for Service to Environment and Society. The award, which recognizes scholarly work to improve human and natural world conditions, is presented each year to a tenure-track faculty member from any of the colleges.
The award will be presented Oct. 5 at the Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Distinguished Lecture on Global Service to Society and Environment. Award nominations can originate from individual faculty members on their own behalf or on behalf of colleagues or from any level of university administration. Nomination packets must include:
- Nominee’s complete resume
- A letter of support from nominee’s department head, dean, associate or assistant dean and/or university officer (writer must submit the nomination packet)
- Statement from the nominee about the impact of his or her work and future plans
- Two letters of support from outside of NC State, attesting to the impact of the nominee’s effort
